1:1イエス・キリストの僕また使徒であるシメオン・ペテロから、わたしたちの神と救主イエス・キリストとの義によって、わたしたちと同じ尊い信仰を授かった人々へ。		1:1 Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained a like precious faith with us in the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ:
1:2神とわたしたちの主イエスとを知ることによって、恵みと平安とが、あなたがたに豊かに加わるように。		1:2 Grace to you and peace be multiplied in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord,
1:3いのちと信心とにかかわるすべてのことは、主イエスの神聖な力によって、わたしたちに与えられている。それは、ご自身の栄光と徳とによって、わたしたちを召されたかたを知る知識によるのである。		1:3 seeing that his divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and virtue;
1:4また、それらのものによって、尊く、大いなる約束が、わたしたちに与えられている。それは、あなたがたが、世にある欲のために滅びることを免れ、神の性質にあずかる者となるためである。		1:4 by which he has granted to us his precious and exceedingly great promises; that through these you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world by lust.
1:5それだから、あなたがたは、力の限りをつくして、あなたがたの信仰に徳を加え、徳に知識を、		1:5 Yes, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence; and in moral excellence, knowledge;
1:6知識に節制を、節制に忍耐を、忍耐に信心を、		1:6 and in knowledge, self-control; and in self-control patience; and in patience godliness;
1:7信心に兄弟愛を、兄弟愛に愛を加えなさい。		1:7 and in godliness brotherly affection; and in brotherly affection, love.
1:8これらのものがあなたがたに備わって、いよいよ豊かになるならば、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストを知る知識について、あなたがたは、怠る者、実を結ばない者となることはないであろう。		1:8 For if these things are yours and abound, they make you to be not idle nor unfruitful to the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1:9これらのものを備えていない者は、盲人であり、近視の者であり、自分の以前の罪がきよめられたことを忘れている者である。		1:9 For he who lacks these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins.
1:10兄弟たちよ。それだから、ますます励んで、あなたがたの受けた召しと選びとを、確かなものにしなさい。そうすれば、決してあやまちに陥ることはない。		1:10 Therefore, brothers, {The word for "brothers" here and where context allows may also be correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings."} be more diligent to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never stumble.
1:11こうして、わたしたちの主また救主イエス・キリストの永遠の国に入る恵みが、あなたがたに豊かに与えられるからである。		1:11 For thus you will be richly supplied with the entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
1:12それだから、あなたがたは既にこれらのことを知っており、また、いま持っている真理に堅く立ってはいるが、わたしは、これらのことをいつも、あなたがたに思い起させたいのである。		1:12 Therefore I will not be negligent to remind you of these things, though you know them, and are established in the present truth.
1:13わたしがこの幕屋にいる間、あなたがたに思い起させて、奮い立たせることが適当と思う。		1:13 I think it right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you;
1:14それは、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストもわたしに示して下さったように、わたしのこの幕屋を脱ぎ去る時が間近であることを知っているからである。		1:14 knowing that the putting off of my tent comes swiftly, even as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me.
1:15わたしが世を去った後にも、これらのことを、あなたがたにいつも思い出させるように努めよう。		1:15 Yes, I will make every effort that you may always be able to remember these things even after my departure.
1:16わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの力と来臨とを、あなたがたに知らせた時、わたしたちは、巧みな作り話を用いることはしなかった。わたしたちが、そのご威光の目撃者なのだからである。		1:16 For we did not follow cunningly devised fables, when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
1:17イエスは父なる神からほまれと栄光とをお受けになったが、その時、おごそかな栄光の中から次のようなみ声がかかったのである、「これはわたしの愛する子、わたしの心にかなう者である」。		1:17 For he received from God the Father honor and glory, when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." {Matthew 17:5; Mark 9:7; Luke 9:35}
1:18わたしたちもイエスと共に聖なる山にいて、天から出たこの声を聞いたのである。		1:18 We heard this voice come out of heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain.
1:19こうして、預言の言葉は、わたしたちにいっそう確実なものになった。あなたがたも、夜が明け、明星がのぼって、あなたがたの心の中を照すまで、この預言の言葉を暗やみに輝くともしびとして、それに目をとめているがよい。		1:19 We have the more sure word of prophecy; and you do well that you heed it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns, and the morning star arises in your hearts:
1:20聖書の預言はすべて、自分勝手に解釈すべきでないことを、まず第一に知るべきである。		1:20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of private interpretation.
1:21なぜなら、預言は決して人間の意志から出たものではなく、人々が聖霊に感じ、神によって語ったものだからである。		1:21 For no prophecy ever came by the will of man: but holy men of God spoke, being moved by the Holy Spirit.
2:1しかし、民の間に、にせ預言者が起ったことがあるが、それと同じく、あなたがたの間にも、にせ教師が現れるであろう。彼らは、滅びに至らせる異端をひそかに持ち込み、自分たちをあがなって下さった主を否定して、すみやかな滅亡を自分の身に招いている。		2:1 But false prophets also arose among the people, as false teachers will also be among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, denying even the Master who bought them, bringing on themselves swift destruction.
2:2また、大ぜいの人が彼らの放縦を見習い、そのために、真理の道がそしりを受けるに至るのである。		2:2 Many will follow their immoral {TR reads "destructive" instead of "immoral"} ways, and as a result, the way of the truth will be maligned.
2:3彼らは、貪欲のために、甘言をもってあなたがたをあざむき、利をむさぼるであろう。彼らに対するさばきは昔から猶予なく行われ、彼らの滅亡も滞ることはない。		2:3 In covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words: whose sentence now from of old doesn't linger, and their destruction will not slumber.
2:4神は、罪を犯した御使たちを許しておかないで、彼らを下界におとしいれ、さばきの時まで暗やみの穴に閉じ込めておかれた。		2:4 For if God didn't spare angels when they sinned, but cast them down to Tartarus {Tartarus is another name for Hell}, and committed them to pits of darkness, to be reserved for judgment;
2:5また、古い世界をそのままにしておかないで、その不信仰な世界に洪水をきたらせ、ただ、義の宣伝者ノアたち八人の者だけを保護された。		2:5 and didn't spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah with seven others, a preacher of righteousness, when he brought a flood on the world of the ungodly;
2:6また、ソドムとゴモラの町々を灰に帰せしめて破滅に処し、不信仰に走ろうとする人々の見せしめとし、		2:6 and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, having made them an example to those who would live ungodly;
2:7ただ、非道の者どもの放縦な行いによってなやまされていた義人ロトだけを救い出された。		2:7 and delivered righteous Lot, who was very distressed by the lustful life of the wicked
2:8（この義人は、彼らの間に住み、彼らの不法の行いを日々見聞きして、その正しい心を痛めていたのである。）		2:8 (for that righteous man dwelling among them, was tormented in his righteous soul from day to day with seeing and hearing lawless deeds):
2:9こういうわけで、主は、信心深い者を試錬の中から救い出し、また、不義な者ども、		2:9 the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment;
2:10特に、汚れた情欲におぼれ肉にしたがって歩み、また、権威ある者を軽んじる人々を罰して、さばきの日まで閉じ込めておくべきことを、よくご存じなのである。こういう人々は、大胆不敵なわがまま者であって、栄光ある者たちをそしってはばかるところがない。		2:10 but chiefly those who walk after the flesh in the lust of defilement, and despise authority. Daring, self-willed, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries;
2:11しかし、御使たちは、勢いにおいても力においても、彼らにまさっているにかかわらず、彼らを主のみまえに訴えそしることはしない。		2:11 whereas angels, though greater in might and power, don't bring a railing judgment against them before the Lord.
2:12これらの者は、捕えられ、ほふられるために生れてきた、分別のない動物のようなもので、自分が知りもしないことをそしり、その不義の報いとして罰を受け、必ず滅ぼされてしまうのである。		2:12 But these, as unreasoning creatures, born natural animals to be taken and destroyed, speaking evil in matters about which they are ignorant, will in their destroying surely be destroyed,
2:13彼らは、真昼でさえ酒食を楽しみ、あなたがたと宴会に同席して、だましごとにふけっている。彼らは、しみであり、きずである。		2:13 receiving the wages of unrighteousness; people who count it pleasure to revel in the daytime, spots and blemishes, reveling in their deceit while they feast with you;
2:14その目は淫行を追い、罪を犯して飽くことを知らない。彼らは心の定まらない者を誘惑し、その心は貪欲に慣れ、のろいの子となっている。		2:14 having eyes full of adultery, and who can't cease from sin; enticing unsettled souls; having a heart trained in greed; children of cursing;
2:15彼らは正しい道からはずれて迷いに陥り、ベオルの子バラムの道に従った。バラムは不義の実を愛し、		2:15 forsaking the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of wrongdoing;
2:16そのために、自分のあやまちに対するとがめを受けた。ものを言わないろばが、人間の声でものを言い、この預言者の狂気じみたふるまいをはばんだのである。		2:16 but he was rebuked for his own disobedience. A mute donkey spoke with a man's voice and stopped the madness of the prophet.
2:17この人々は、いわば、水のない井戸、突風に吹きはらわれる霧であって、彼らには暗やみが用意されている。		2:17 These are wells without water, clouds driven by a storm; for whom the blackness of darkness has been reserved forever.
2:18彼らはむなしい誇を語り、迷いの中に生きている人々の間から、かろうじてのがれてきた者たちを、肉欲と色情とによって誘惑し、		2:18 For, uttering great swelling words of emptiness, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by licentiousness, those who are indeed escaping from those who live in error;
2:19この人々に自由を与えると約束しながら、彼ら自身は滅亡の奴隷になっている。おおよそ、人は征服者の奴隷となるものである。		2:19 promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption; for a man is brought into bondage by whoever overcomes him.
2:20彼らが、主また救主なるイエス・キリストを知ることにより、この世の汚れからのがれた後、またそれに巻き込まれて征服されるならば、彼らの後の状態は初めよりも、もっと悪くなる。		2:20 For if, after they have escaped the defilement of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in it and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.
2:21義の道を心得ていながら、自分に授けられた聖なる戒めにそむくよりは、むしろ義の道を知らなかった方がよい。		2:21 For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them.
2:22ことわざに、「犬は自分の吐いた物に帰り、豚は洗われても、また、どろの中にころがって行く」とあるが、彼らの身に起ったことは、そのとおりである。		2:22 But it has happened to them according to the true proverb, "The dog turns to his own vomit again," {Proverbs 26:11} and "the sow that has washed to wallowing in the mire."
3:1愛する者たちよ。わたしは今この第二の手紙をあなたがたに書きおくり、これらの手紙によって記憶を呼び起し、あなたがたの純真な心を奮い立たせようとした。		3:1 This is now, beloved, the second letter that I have written to you; and in both of them I stir up your sincere mind by reminding you;
3:2それは、聖なる預言者たちがあらかじめ語った言葉と、あなたがたの使徒たちが伝えた主なる救主の戒めとを、思い出させるためである。		3:2 that you should remember the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and the commandments of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior:
3:3まず次のことを知るべきである。終りの時にあざける者たちが、あざけりながら出てきて、自分の欲情のままに生活し、		3:3 knowing this first, that in the last days mockers will come, walking after their own lusts,
3:4「主の来臨の約束はどうなったのか。先祖たちが眠りについてから、すべてのものは天地創造の初めからそのままであって、変ってはいない」と言うであろう。		3:4 and saying, "Where is the promise of his coming? For, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation."
3:5すなわち、彼らはこのことを認めようとはしない。古い昔に天が存在し、地は神の言によって、水がもとになり、また、水によって成ったのであるが、		3:5 For this they willfully forget, that there were heavens from of old, and an earth formed out of water and amid water, by the word of God;
3:6その時の世界は、御言により水でおおわれて滅んでしまった。		3:6 by which means the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished.
3:7しかし、今の天と地とは、同じ御言によって保存され、不信仰な人々がさばかれ、滅ぼさるべき日に火で焼かれる時まで、そのまま保たれているのである。		3:7 But the heavens that now are, and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
3:8愛する者たちよ。この一事を忘れてはならない。主にあっては、一日は千年のようであり、千年は一日のようである。		3:8 But don't forget this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
3:9ある人々がおそいと思っているように、主は約束の実行をおそくしておられるのではない。ただ、ひとりも滅びることがなく、すべての者が悔改めに至ることを望み、あなたがたに対してながく忍耐しておられるのである。		3:9 The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but is patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
3:10しかし、主の日は盗人のように襲って来る。その日には、天は大音響をたてて消え去り、天体は焼けてくずれ、地とその上に造り出されたものも、みな焼きつくされるであろう。		3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.
3:11このように、これらはみなくずれ落ちていくものであるから、神の日の到来を熱心に待ち望んでいるあなたがたは、		3:11 Therefore since all these things will be destroyed like this, what kind of people ought you to be in holy living and godliness,
3:12極力、きよく信心深い行いをしていなければならない。その日には、天は燃えくずれ、天体は焼けうせてしまう。		3:12 looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, which will cause the burning heavens to be dissolved, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?
3:13しかし、わたしたちは、神の約束に従って、義の住む新しい天と新しい地とを待ち望んでいる。		3:13 But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.
3:14愛する者たちよ。それだから、この日を待っているあなたがたは、しみもなくきずもなく、安らかな心で、神のみまえに出られるように励みなさい。		3:14 Therefore, beloved, seeing that you look for these things, be diligent to be found in peace, without blemish and blameless in his sight.
3:15また、わたしたちの主の寛容は救のためであると思いなさい。このことは、わたしたちの愛する兄弟パウロが、彼に与えられた知恵によって、あなたがたに書きおくったとおりである。		3:15 Regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, wrote to you;
3:16彼は、どの手紙にもこれらのことを述べている。その手紙の中には、ところどころ、わかりにくい箇所もあって、無学で心の定まらない者たちは、ほかの聖書についてもしているように、無理な解釈をほどこして、自分の滅亡を招いている。		3:16 as also in all of his letters, speaking in them of these things. In those, there are some things that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unsettled twist, as they also do to the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.
3:17愛する者たちよ。それだから、あなたがたはかねてから心がけているように、非道の者の惑わしに誘い込まれて、あなたがた自身の確信を失うことのないように心がけなさい。		3:17 You therefore, beloved, knowing these things beforehand, beware, lest being carried away with the error of the wicked, you fall from your own steadfastness.
3:18そして、わたしたちの主また救主イエス・キリストの恵みと知識とにおいて、ますます豊かになりなさい。栄光が、今も、また永遠の日に至るまでも、主にあるように、アァメン。		3:18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.
