1:1神の御旨により、キリスト・イエスにあるいのちの約束によって立てられたキリスト・イエスの使徒パウロから、		1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, according to the promise of the life which is in Christ Jesus,
1:2愛する子テモテへ。父なる神とわたしたちの主キリスト・イエスから、恵みとあわれみと平安とが、あなたにあるように。		1:2 to Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
1:3わたしは、日夜、祈の中で、絶えずあなたのことを思い出しては、きよい良心をもって先祖以来つかえている神に感謝している。		1:3 I thank God, whom I serve as my forefathers did, with a pure conscience. How unceasing is my memory of you in my petitions, night and day
1:4わたしは、あなたの涙をおぼえており、あなたに会って喜びで満たされたいと、切に願っている。		1:4 longing to see you, remembering your tears, that I may be filled with joy;
1:5また、あなたがいだいている偽りのない信仰を思い起している。この信仰は、まずあなたの祖母ロイスとあなたの母ユニケとに宿ったものであったが、今あなたにも宿っていると、わたしは確信している。		1:5 having been reminded of the sincere faith that is in you; which lived first in your grandmother Lois, and your mother Eunice, and, I am persuaded, in you also.
1:6こういうわけで、あなたに注意したい。わたしの按手によって内にいただいた神の賜物を、再び燃えたたせなさい。		1:6 For this cause, I remind you that you should stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
1:7というのは、神がわたしたちに下さったのは、臆する霊ではなく、力と愛と慎みとの霊なのである。		1:7 For God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.
1:8だから、あなたは、わたしたちの主のあかしをすることや、わたしが主の囚人であることを、決して恥ずかしく思ってはならない。むしろ、神の力にささえられて、福音のために、わたしと苦しみを共にしてほしい。		1:8 Therefore don't be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner; but endure hardship for the Good News according to the power of God,
1:9神はわたしたちを救い、聖なる招きをもって召して下さったのであるが、それは、わたしたちのわざによるのではなく、神ご自身の計画に基き、また、永遠の昔にキリスト・イエスにあってわたしたちに賜わっていた恵み、		1:9 who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before times eternal,
1:10そして今や、わたしたちの救主キリスト・イエスの出現によって明らかにされた恵みによるのである。キリストは死を滅ぼし、福音によっていのちと不死とを明らかに示されたのである。		1:10 but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who abolished death, and brought life and immortality to light through the Good News.
1:11わたしは、この福音のために立てられて、その宣教者、使徒、教師になった。		1:11 For this, I was appointed as a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.
1:12そのためにまた、わたしはこのような苦しみを受けているが、それを恥としない。なぜなら、わたしは自分の信じてきたかたを知っており、またそのかたは、わたしにゆだねられているものを、かの日に至るまで守って下さることができると、確信しているからである。		1:12 For this cause I also suffer these things. Yet I am not ashamed, for I know him whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that he is able to guard that which I have committed to him against that day.
1:13あなたは、キリスト・イエスに対する信仰と愛とをもって、わたしから聞いた健全な言葉を模範にしなさい。		1:13 Hold the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
1:14そして、あなたにゆだねられている尊いものを、わたしたちの内に宿っている聖霊によって守りなさい。		1:14 That good thing which was committed to you, guard through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.
1:15あなたの知っているように、アジヤにいる者たちは、皆わたしから離れて行った。その中には、フゲロとヘルモゲネもいる。		1:15 This you know, that all who are in Asia turned away from me; of whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes.
1:16どうか、主が、オネシポロの家にあわれみをたれて下さるように。彼はたびたび、わたしを慰めてくれ、またわたしの鎖を恥とも思わないで、		1:16 May the Lord grant mercy to the house of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain,
1:17ローマに着いた時には、熱心にわたしを捜しまわった末、尋ね出してくれたのである。		1:17 but when he was in Rome, he sought me diligently, and found me
1:18どうか、主がかの日に、あわれみを彼に賜わるように。彼がエペソで、どれほどわたしに仕えてくれたかは、だれよりもあなたがよく知っている。		1:18 (the Lord grant to him to find the Lord's mercy in that day); and in how many things he served at Ephesus, you know very well.
2:1そこで、わたしの子よ。あなたはキリスト・イエスにある恵みによって、強くなりなさい。		2:1 You therefore, my child, be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
2:2そして、あなたが多くの証人の前でわたしから聞いたことを、さらにほかの者たちにも教えることのできるような忠実な人々に、ゆだねなさい。		2:2 The things which you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit the same to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.
2:3キリスト・イエスの良い兵卒として、わたしと苦しみを共にしてほしい。		2:3 You therefore must endure hardship, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.
2:4兵役に服している者は、日常生活の事に煩わされてはいない。ただ、兵を募った司令官を喜ばせようと努める。		2:4 No soldier on duty entangles himself in the affairs of life, that he may please him who enrolled him as a soldier.
2:5また、競技をするにしても、規定に従って競技をしなければ、栄冠は得られない。		2:5 Also, if anyone competes in athletics, he isn't crowned unless he has competed by the rules.
2:6労苦をする農夫が、だれよりも先に、生産物の分配にあずかるべきである。		2:6 The farmers who labor must be the first to get a share of the crops.
2:7わたしの言うことを、よく考えてみなさい。主は、それを十分に理解する力をあなたに賜わるであろう。		2:7 Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things.
2:8ダビデの子孫として生れ、死人のうちからよみがえったイエス・キリストを、いつも思っていなさい。これがわたしの福音である。		2:8 Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, of the seed of David, according to my Good News,
2:9この福音のために、わたしは悪者のように苦しめられ、ついに鎖につながれるに至った。しかし、神の言はつながれてはいない。		2:9 in which I suffer hardship to the point of chains as a criminal. But God's word isn't chained.
2:10それだから、わたしは選ばれた人たちのために、いっさいのことを耐え忍ぶのである。それは、彼らもキリスト・イエスによる救を受け、また、それと共に永遠の栄光を受けるためである。		2:10 Therefore I endure all things for the chosen ones' sake, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
2:11次の言葉は確実である。「もしわたしたちが、彼と共に死んだなら、また彼と共に生きるであろう。		2:11 This saying is faithful: "For if we died with him, we will also live with him.
2:12もし耐え忍ぶなら、彼と共に支配者となるであろう。もし彼を否むなら、彼もわたしたちを否むであろう。		2:12 If we endure, we will also reign with him. If we deny him, he also will deny us.
2:13たとい、わたしたちは不真実であっても、彼は常に真実である。彼は自分を偽ることが、できないのである」。		2:13 If we are faithless, he remains faithful. He can't deny himself."
2:14あなたは、これらのことを彼らに思い出させて、なんの益もなく、聞いている人々を破滅におとしいれるだけである言葉の争いをしないように、神のみまえでおごそかに命じなさい。		2:14 Remind them of these things, charging them in the sight of the Lord, that they don't argue about words, to no profit, to the subverting of those who hear.
2:15あなたは真理の言葉を正しく教え、恥じるところのない錬達した働き人になって、神に自分をささげるように努めはげみなさい。		2:15 Give diligence to present yourself approved by God, a workman who doesn't need to be ashamed, properly handling the Word of Truth.
2:16俗悪なむだ話を避けなさい。それによって人々は、ますます不信心に落ちていき、		2:16 But shun empty chatter, for it will go further in ungodliness,
2:17彼らの言葉は、がんのように腐れひろがるであろう。その中にはヒメナオとピレトとがいる。		2:17 and those words will consume like gangrene, of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;
2:18彼らは真理からはずれ、復活はすでに済んでしまったと言い、そして、ある人々の信仰をくつがえしている。		2:18 men who have erred concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past, and overthrowing the faith of some.
2:19しかし、神のゆるがない土台はすえられていて、それに次の句が証印として、しるされている。「主は自分の者たちを知る」。また「主の名を呼ぶ者は、すべて不義から離れよ」。		2:19 However God's firm foundation stands, having this seal, "The Lord knows those who are his," {Numbers 16:5} and, "Let every one who names the name of the Lord {TR reads "Christ" instead of "the Lord"} depart from unrighteousness."
2:20大きな家には、金や銀の器ばかりではなく、木や土の器もあり、そして、あるものは尊いことに用いられ、あるものは卑しいことに用いられる。		2:20 Now in a large house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of clay. Some are for honor, and some for dishonor.
2:21もし人が卑しいものを取り去って自分をきよめるなら、彼は尊いきよめられた器となって、主人に役立つものとなり、すべての良いわざに間に合うようになる。		2:21 If anyone therefore purges himself from these, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, and suitable for the master's use, prepared for every good work.
2:22そこで、あなたは若い時の情欲を避けなさい。そして、きよい心をもって主を呼び求める人々と共に、義と信仰と愛と平和とを追い求めなさい。		2:22 Flee from youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
2:23愚かで無知な論議をやめなさい。それは、あなたが知っているとおり、ただ争いに終るだけである。		2:23 But refuse foolish and ignorant questionings, knowing that they generate strife.
2:24主の僕たる者は争ってはならない。だれに対しても親切であって、よく教え、よく忍び、		2:24 The Lord's servant must not quarrel, but be gentle towards all, able to teach, patient,
2:25反対する者を柔和な心で教え導くべきである。おそらく神は、彼らに悔改めの心を与えて、真理を知らせ、		2:25 in gentleness correcting those who oppose him: perhaps God may give them repentance leading to a full knowledge of the truth,
2:26一度は悪魔に捕えられてその欲するままになっていても、目ざめて彼のわなからのがれさせて下さるであろう。		2:26 and they may recover themselves out of the devil's snare, having been taken captive by him to his will.
3:1しかし、このことは知っておかねばならない。終りの時には、苦難の時代が来る。		3:1 But know this, that in the last days, grievous times will come.
3:2その時、人々は自分を愛する者、金を愛する者、大言壮語する者、高慢な者、神をそしる者、親に逆らう者、恩を知らぬ者、神聖を汚す者、		3:2 For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3:3無情な者、融和しない者、そしる者、無節制な者、粗暴な者、善を好まない者、		3:3 without natural affection, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, no lovers of good,
3:4裏切り者、乱暴者、高言をする者、神よりも快楽を愛する者、		3:4 traitors, headstrong, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God;
3:5信心深い様子をしながらその実を捨てる者となるであろう。こうした人々を避けなさい。		3:5 holding a form of godliness, but having denied its power. Turn away from these, also.
3:6彼らの中には、人の家にもぐり込み、そして、さまざまの欲に心を奪われて、多くの罪を積み重ねている愚かな女どもを、とりこにしている者がある。		3:6 For some of these are people who creep into houses, and take captive gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts,
3:7彼女たちは、常に学んではいるが、いつになっても真理の知識に達することができない。		3:7 always learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
3:8ちょうど、ヤンネとヤンブレとがモーセに逆らったように、こうした人々も真理に逆らうのである。彼らは知性の腐った、信仰の失格者である。		3:8 Even as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so do these also oppose the truth; men corrupted in mind, who concerning the faith, are rejected.
3:9しかし、彼らはそのまま進んでいけるはずがない。彼らの愚かさは、あのふたりの場合と同じように、多くの人に知れて来るであろう。		3:9 But they will proceed no further. For their folly will be evident to all men, as theirs also came to be.
3:10しかしあなたは、わたしの教、歩み、こころざし、信仰、寛容、愛、忍耐、		3:10 But you did follow my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, steadfastness,
3:11それから、わたしがアンテオケ、イコニオム、ルステラで受けた数々の迫害、苦難に、よくも続いてきてくれた。そのひどい迫害にわたしは耐えてきたが、主はそれらいっさいのことから、救い出して下さったのである。		3:11 persecutions, and sufferings: those things that happened to me at Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. I endured those persecutions. Out of them all the Lord delivered me.
3:12いったい、キリスト・イエスにあって信心深く生きようとする者は、みな、迫害を受ける。		3:12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
3:13悪人と詐欺師とは人を惑わし人に惑わされて、悪から悪へと落ちていく。		3:13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.
3:14しかし、あなたは、自分が学んで確信しているところに、いつもとどまっていなさい。あなたは、それをだれから学んだか知っており、		3:14 But you remain in the things which you have learned and have been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them.
3:15また幼い時から、聖書に親しみ、それが、キリスト・イエスに対する信仰によって救に至る知恵を、あなたに与えうる書物であることを知っている。		3:15 From infancy, you have known the holy Scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith, which is in Christ Jesus.
3:16聖書は、すべて神の霊感を受けて書かれたものであって、人を教え、戒め、正しくし、義に導くのに有益である。		3:16 Every Scripture is God-breathed and {or, Every writing inspired by God is} profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness,
3:17それによって、神の人が、あらゆる良いわざに対して十分な準備ができて、完全にととのえられた者になるのである。		3:17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
4:1神のみまえと、生きている者と死んだ者とをさばくべきキリスト・イエスのみまえで、キリストの出現とその御国とを思い、おごそかに命じる。		4:1 I command you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at his appearing and his Kingdom:
4:2御言を宣べ伝えなさい。時が良くても悪くても、それを励み、あくまでも寛容な心でよく教えて、責め、戒め、勧めなさい。		4:2 preach the word; be urgent in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with all patience and teaching.
4:3人々が健全な教に耐えられなくなり、耳ざわりのよい話をしてもらおうとして、自分勝手な好みにまかせて教師たちを寄せ集め、		4:3 For the time will come when they will not listen to the sound doctrine, but, having itching ears, will heap up for themselves teachers after their own lusts;
4:4そして、真理からは耳をそむけて、作り話の方にそれていく時が来るであろう。		4:4 and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside to fables.
4:5しかし、あなたは、何事にも慎み、苦難を忍び、伝道者のわざをなし、自分の務を全うしなさい。		4:5 But you be sober in all things, suffer hardship, do the work of an evangelist, and fulfill your ministry.
4:6わたしは、すでに自身を犠牲としてささげている。わたしが世を去るべき時はきた。		4:6 For I am already being offered, and the time of my departure has come.
4:7わたしは戦いをりっぱに戦いぬき、走るべき行程を走りつくし、信仰を守りとおした。		4:7 I have fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith.
4:8今や、義の冠がわたしを待っているばかりである。かの日には、公平な審判者である主が、それを授けて下さるであろう。わたしばかりではなく、主の出現を心から待ち望んでいたすべての人にも授けて下さるであろう。		4:8 From now on, there is stored up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day; and not to me only, but also to all those who have loved his appearing.
4:9わたしの所に、急いで早くきてほしい。		4:9 Be diligent to come to me soon,
4:10デマスはこの世を愛し、わたしを捨ててテサロニケに行ってしまい、クレスケンスはガラテヤに、テトスはダルマテヤに行った。		4:10 for Demas left me, having loved this present world, and went to Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia.
4:11ただルカだけが、わたしのもとにいる。マルコを連れて、一緒にきなさい。彼はわたしの務のために役に立つから。		4:11 Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for service.
4:12わたしはテキコをエペソにつかわした。		4:12 But I sent Tychicus to Ephesus.
4:13あなたが来るときに、トロアスのカルポの所に残しておいた上着を持ってきてほしい。また書物も、特に、羊皮紙のを持ってきてもらいたい。		4:13 Bring the cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus when you come, and the books, especially the parchments.
4:14銅細工人のアレキサンデルが、わたしを大いに苦しめた。主はそのしわざに対して、彼に報いなさるだろう。		4:14 Alexander, the coppersmith, did much evil to me. The Lord will repay him according to his works,
4:15あなたも、彼を警戒しなさい。彼は、わたしたちの言うことに強く反対したのだから。		4:15 of whom you also must beware; for he greatly opposed our words.
4:16わたしの第一回の弁明の際には、わたしに味方をする者はひとりもなく、みなわたしを捨てて行った。どうか、彼らが、そのために責められることがないように。		4:16 At my first defense, no one came to help me, but all left me. May it not be held against them.
4:17しかし、わたしが御言を余すところなく宣べ伝えて、すべての異邦人に聞かせるように、主はわたしを助け、力づけて下さった。そして、わたしは、ししの口から救い出されたのである。		4:17 But the Lord stood by me, and strengthened me, that through me the message might be fully proclaimed, and that all the Gentiles might hear; and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.
4:18主はわたしを、すべての悪のわざから助け出し、天にある御国に救い入れて下さるであろう。栄光が永遠から永遠にわたって主にあるように、アァメン。		4:18 And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me for his heavenly Kingdom; to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
4:19プリスカとアクラとに、またオネシポロの家に、よろしく伝えてほしい。		4:19 Greet Prisca and Aquila, and the house of Onesiphorus.
4:20エラストはコリントにとどまっており、トロピモは病気なので、ミレトに残してきた。		4:20 Erastus remained at Corinth, but I left Trophimus at Miletus sick.
4:21冬になる前に、急いできてほしい。ユブロ、プデス、リノス、クラウデヤならびにすべての兄弟たちから、あなたによろしく。		4:21 Be diligent to come before winter. Eubulus salutes you, as do Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the brothers.
4:22主が、あなたの霊と共にいますように。恵みが、あなたがたと共にあるように。		4:22 The Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.
