1:2わたしたちは祈の時にあなたがたを覚え、あなたがた一同のことを、いつも神に感謝し、		1:2 We always give thanks to God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers,
1:3あなたがたの信仰の働きと、愛の労苦と、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストに対する望みの忍耐とを、わたしたちの父なる神のみまえに、絶えず思い起している。		1:3 remembering without ceasing your work of faith and labor of love and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, before our God and Father.
1:4神に愛されている兄弟たちよ。わたしたちは、あなたがたが神に選ばれていることを知っている。		1:4 We know, brothers {The word for "brothers" here and where context allows may also be correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings."} loved by God, that you are chosen,

1:7こうして、マケドニヤとアカヤとにいる信者全体の模範になった。		1:7 so that you became an example to all who believe in Macedonia and in Achaia.
1:8すなわち、主の言葉はあなたがたから出て、ただマケドニヤとアカヤとに響きわたっているばかりではなく、至るところで、神に対するあなたがたの信仰のことが言いひろめられたので、これについては何も述べる必要はないほどである。		1:8 For from you the word of the Lord has been declared, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith toward God has gone out; so that we need not to say anything.
1:9わたしたちが、どんなにしてあなたがたの所にはいって行ったか、また、あなたがたが、どんなにして偶像を捨てて神に立ち帰り、生けるまことの神に仕えるようになり、		1:9 For they themselves report concerning us what kind of a reception we had from you; and how you turned to God from idols, to serve a living and true God,
1:10そして、死人の中からよみがえった神の御子、すなわち、わたしたちをきたるべき怒りから救い出して下さるイエスが、天から下ってこられるのを待つようになったかを、彼ら自身が言いひろめているのである。		1:10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead--Jesus, who delivers us from the wrath to come.
2:1兄弟たちよ。あなたがた自身が知っているとおり、わたしたちがあなたがたの所にはいって行ったことは、むだではなかった。		2:1 For you yourselves know, brothers, our visit to you wasn't in vain,
2:2それどころか、あなたがたが知っているように、わたしたちは、先にピリピで苦しめられ、はずかしめられたにもかかわらず、わたしたちの神に勇気を与えられて、激しい苦闘のうちに神の福音をあなたがたに語ったのである。		2:2 but having suffered before and been shamefully treated, as you know, at Philippi, we grew bold in our God to tell you the Good News of God in much conflict.
2:3いったい、わたしたちの宣教は、迷いや汚れた心から出たものでもなく、だましごとでもない。		2:3 For our exhortation is not of error, nor of uncleanness, nor in deception.
2:4かえって、わたしたちは神の信任を受けて福音を託されたので、人間に喜ばれるためではなく、わたしたちの心を見分ける神に喜ばれるように、福音を語るのである。		2:4 But even as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News, so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, who tests our hearts.
2:5わたしたちは、あなたがたが知っているように、決してへつらいの言葉を用いたこともなく、口実を設けて、むさぼったこともない。それは、神があかしして下さる。		2:5 For neither were we at any time found using words of flattery, as you know, nor a cloak of covetousness (God is witness),
2:6また、わたしたちは、キリストの使徒として重んじられることができたのであるが、あなたがたからにもせよ、ほかの人々からにもせよ、人間からの栄誉を求めることはしなかった。		2:6 nor seeking glory from men (neither from you nor from others), when we might have claimed authority as apostles of Christ.
2:7むしろ、あなたがたの間で、ちょうど母がその子供を育てるように、やさしくふるまった。		2:7 But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother cherishes her own children.
2:8このように、あなたがたを慕わしく思っていたので、ただ神の福音ばかりではなく、自分のいのちまでもあなたがたに与えたいと願ったほどに、あなたがたを愛したのである。		2:8 Even so, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you, not the Good News of God only, but also our own souls, because you had become very dear to us.
2:9兄弟たちよ。あなたがたはわたしたちの労苦と努力とを記憶していることであろう。すなわち、あなたがたのだれにも負担をかけまいと思って、日夜はたらきながら、あなたがたに神の福音を宣べ伝えた。		2:9 For you remember, brothers, our labor and travail; for working night and day, that we might not burden any of you, we preached to you the Good News of God.
2:10あなたがたもあかしし、神もあかしして下さるように、わたしたちはあなたがた信者の前で、信心深く、正しく、責められるところがないように、生活をしたのである。		2:10 You are witnesses with God, how holy, righteously, and blamelessly we behaved ourselves toward you who believe.
2:11そして、あなたがたも知っているとおり、父がその子に対してするように、あなたがたのひとりびとりに対して、		2:11 As you know, we exhorted, comforted, and implored every one of you, as a father does his own children,
2:12御国とその栄光とに召して下さった神のみこころにかなって歩くようにと、勧め、励まし、また、さとしたのである。		2:12 to the end that you should walk worthily of God, who calls you into his own Kingdom and glory.
2:13これらのことを考えて、わたしたちがまた絶えず神に感謝しているのは、あなたがたがわたしたちの説いた神の言を聞いた時に、それを人間の言葉としてではなく、神の言として事実そのとおりであるが受けいれてくれたことである。そして、この神の言は、信じるあなたがたのうちに働いているのである。		2:13 For this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that, when you received from us the word of the message of God, you accepted it not as the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which also works in you who believe.
2:14兄弟たちよ。あなたがたは、ユダヤの、キリスト・イエスにある神の諸教会にならう者となった。すなわち、彼らがユダヤ人たちから苦しめられたと同じように、あなたがたもまた同国人から苦しめられた。		2:14 For you, brothers, became imitators of the assemblies of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus; for you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, even as they did from the Jews;
2:15ユダヤ人たちは主イエスと預言者たちとを殺し、わたしたちを迫害し、神を喜ばせず、すべての人に逆らい、		2:15 who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and drove us out, and didn't please God, and are contrary to all men;
2:16わたしたちが異邦人に救の言を語るのを妨げて、絶えず自分の罪を満たしている。そこで、神の怒りは最も激しく彼らに臨むに至ったのである。		2:16 forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they may be saved; to fill up their sins always. But wrath has come on them to the uttermost.
2:17兄弟たちよ。わたしたちは、しばらくの間、あなたがたから引き離されていたので心においてではなく、からだだけではあるがなおさら、あなたがたの顔を見たいと切にこいねがった。		2:17 But we, brothers, being bereaved of you for a short season, in presence, not in heart, tried even harder to see your face with great desire,
2:18だから、わたしたちは、あなたがたの所に行こうとした。ことに、このパウロは、一再ならず行こうとしたのである。それだのに、わたしたちはサタンに妨げられた。		2:18 because we wanted to come to you--indeed, I, Paul, once and again--but Satan hindered us.

2:20あなたがたこそ、実にわたしたちのほまれであり、喜びである。		2:20 For you are our glory and our joy.
3:1そこで、わたしたちはこれ以上耐えられなくなって、わたしたちだけがアテネに留まることに定め、		3:1 Therefore when we couldn't stand it any longer, we thought it good to be left behind at Athens alone,
3:2わたしたちの兄弟で、キリストの福音における神の同労者テモテをつかわした。それは、あなたがたの信仰を強め、		3:2 and sent Timothy, our brother and God's servant in the Good News of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith;
3:3このような患難の中にあって、動揺する者がひとりもないように励ますためであった。あなたがたの知っているとおり、わたしたちは患難に会うように定められているのである。		3:3 that no one be moved by these afflictions. For you know that we are appointed to this task.
3:4そして、あなたがたの所にいたとき、わたしたちがやがて患難に会うことをあらかじめ言っておいたが、あなたがたの知っているように、今そのとおりになったのである。		3:4 For most certainly, when we were with you, we told you beforehand that we are to suffer affliction, even as it happened, and you know.
3:5そこで、わたしはこれ以上耐えられなくなって、もしや「試みる者」があなたがたを試み、そのためにわたしたちの労苦がむだになりはしないかと気づかって、あなたがたの信仰を知るために、彼をつかわしたのである。		3:5 For this cause I also, when I couldn't stand it any longer, sent that I might know your faith, for fear that by any means the tempter had tempted you, and our labor would have been in vain.
3:6ところが今テモテが、あなたがたの所からわたしたちのもとに帰ってきて、あなたがたの信仰と愛とについて知らせ、また、あなたがたがいつもわたしたちのことを覚え、わたしたちがあなたがたに会いたく思っていると同じように、わたしたちにしきりに会いたがっているという吉報をもたらした。		3:6 But when Timothy came just now to us from you, and brought us glad news of your faith and love, and that you have good memories of us always, longing to see us, even as we also long to see you;
3:7兄弟たちよ。それによって、わたしたちはあらゆる苦難と患難との中にありながら、あなたがたの信仰によって慰められた。		3:7 for this cause, brothers, we were comforted over you in all our distress and affliction through your faith.
3:8なぜなら、あなたがたが主にあって堅く立ってくれるなら、わたしたちはいま生きることになるからである。		3:8 For now we live, if you stand fast in the Lord.
3:9ほんとうに、わたしたちの神のみまえで、あなたがたのことで喜ぶ大きな喜びのために、どんな感謝を神にささげたらよいだろうか。		3:9 For what thanksgiving can we render again to God for you, for all the joy with which we rejoice for your sakes before our God;
3:10わたしたちは、あなたがたの顔を見、あなたがたの信仰の足りないところを補いたいと、日夜しきりに願っているのである。		3:10 night and day praying exceedingly that we may see your face, and may perfect that which is lacking in your faith?
3:11どうか、わたしたちの父なる神ご自身と、わたしたちの主イエスとが、あなたがたのところへ行く道を、わたしたちに開いて下さるように。		3:11 Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way to you;
3:12どうか、主が、あなたがた相互の愛とすべての人に対する愛とを、わたしたちがあなたがたを愛する愛と同じように、増し加えて豊かにして下さるように。		3:12 and the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we also do toward you,
3:13そして、どうか、わたしたちの主イエスが、そのすべての聖なる者と共にこられる時、神のみまえに、あなたがたの心を強め、清く、責められるところのない者にして下さるように。		3:13 to the end he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.
4:1最後に、兄弟たちよ。わたしたちは主イエスにあってあなたがたに願いかつ勧める。あなたがたが、どのように歩いて神を喜ばすべきかをわたしたちから学んだように、また、いま歩いているとおりに、ますます歩き続けなさい。		4:1 Finally then, brothers, we beg and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, that you abound more and more.
4:2わたしたちがどういう教を主イエスによって与えたか、あなたがたはよく知っている。		4:2 For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus.
4:3神のみこころは、あなたがたが清くなることである。すなわち、不品行を慎み、		4:3 For this is the will of God: your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality,
4:4各自、気をつけて自分のからだを清く尊く保ち、		4:4 that each one of you know how to possess himself of his own vessel in sanctification and honor,
4:5神を知らない異邦人のように情欲をほしいままにせず、		4:5 not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who don't know God;
4:6また、このようなことで兄弟を踏みつけたり、だましたりしてはならない。前にもあなたがたにきびしく警告しておいたように、主はこれらすべてのことについて、報いをなさるからである。		4:6 that no one should take advantage of and wrong a brother or sister in this matter; because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as also we forewarned you and testified.
4:7神がわたしたちを召されたのは、汚れたことをするためではなく、清くなるためである。		4:7 For God called us not for uncleanness, but in sanctification.
4:8こういうわけであるから、これらの警告を拒む者は、人を拒むのではなく、聖霊をあなたがたの心に賜わる神を拒むのである。		4:8 Therefore he who rejects this doesn't reject man, but God, who has also given his Holy Spirit to you.
4:9兄弟愛については、今さら書きおくる必要はない。あなたがたは、互に愛し合うように神に直接教えられており、		4:9 But concerning brotherly love, you have no need that one write to you. For you yourselves are taught by God to love one another,
4:10また、事実マケドニヤ全土にいるすべての兄弟に対して、それを実行しているのだから。しかし、兄弟たちよ。あなたがたに勧める。ますます、そうしてほしい。		4:10 for indeed you do it toward all the brothers who are in all Macedonia. But we exhort you, brothers, that you abound more and more;
4:11そして、あなたがたに命じておいたように、つとめて落ち着いた生活をし、自分の仕事に身をいれ、手ずから働きなさい。		4:11 and that you make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, even as we instructed you;
4:12そうすれば、外部の人々に対して品位を保ち、まただれの世話にもならずに、生活できるであろう。		4:12 that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and may have need of nothing.
4:13兄弟たちよ。眠っている人々については、無知でいてもらいたくない。望みを持たない外の人々のように、あなたがたが悲しむことのないためである。		4:13 But we don't want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don't grieve like the rest, who have no hope.
4:14わたしたちが信じているように、イエスが死んで復活されたからには、同様に神はイエスにあって眠っている人々をも、イエスと一緒に導き出して下さるであろう。		4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.
4:15わたしたちは主の言葉によって言うが、生きながらえて主の来臨の時まで残るわたしたちが、眠った人々より先になることは、決してないであろう。		4:15 For this we tell you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left to the coming of the Lord, will in no way precede those who have fallen asleep.
4:16すなわち、主ご自身が天使のかしらの声と神のラッパの鳴り響くうちに、合図の声で、天から下ってこられる。その時、キリストにあって死んだ人々が、まず最初によみがえり、		4:16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with God's trumpet. The dead in Christ will rise first,
4:17それから生き残っているわたしたちが、彼らと共に雲に包まれて引き上げられ、空中で主に会い、こうして、いつも主と共にいるであろう。		4:17 then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air. So we will be with the Lord forever.
4:18だから、あなたがたは、これらの言葉をもって互に慰め合いなさい。		4:18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.
5:1兄弟たちよ。その時期と場合とについては、書きおくる必要はない。		5:1 But concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need that anything be written to you.
5:2あなたがた自身がよく知っているとおり、主の日は盗人が夜くるように来る。		5:2 For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night.
5:3人々が平和だ無事だと言っているその矢先に、ちょうど妊婦に産みの苦しみが臨むように、突如として滅びが彼らをおそって来る。そして、それからのがれることは決してできない。		5:3 For when they are saying, "Peace and safety," then sudden destruction will come on them, like birth pains on a pregnant woman; and they will in no way escape.
5:4しかし兄弟たちよ。あなたがたは暗やみの中にいないのだから、その日が、盗人のようにあなたがたを不意に襲うことはないであろう。		5:4 But you, brothers, aren't in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief.
5:5あなたがたはみな光の子であり、昼の子なのである。わたしたちは、夜の者でもやみの者でもない。		5:5 You are all children of light, and children of the day. We don't belong to the night, nor to darkness,
5:6だから、ほかの人々のように眠っていないで、目をさまして慎んでいよう。		5:6 so then let's not sleep, as the rest do, but let's watch and be sober.
5:7眠る者は夜眠り、酔う者は夜酔うのである。		5:7 For those who sleep, sleep in the night, and those who are drunk are drunk in the night.
5:8しかし、わたしたちは昼の者なのだから、信仰と愛との胸当を身につけ、救の望みのかぶとをかぶって、慎んでいよう。		5:8 But let us, since we belong to the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and, for a helmet, the hope of salvation.
5:9神は、わたしたちを怒りにあわせるように定められたのではなく、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストによって救を得るように定められたのである。		5:9 For God didn't appoint us to wrath, but to the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
5:10キリストがわたしたちのために死なれたのは、さめていても眠っていても、わたしたちが主と共に生きるためである。		5:10 who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.
5:11だから、あなたがたは、今しているように、互に慰め合い、相互の徳を高めなさい。		5:11 Therefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as you also do.
5:12兄弟たちよ。わたしたちはお願いする。どうか、あなたがたの間で労し、主にあってあなたがたを指導し、かつ訓戒している人々を重んじ、		5:12 But we beg you, brothers, to know those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you,
5:13彼らの働きを思って、特に愛し敬いなさい。互に平和に過ごしなさい。		5:13 and to respect and honor them in love for their work's sake. Be at peace among yourselves.
5:14兄弟たちよ。あなたがたにお勧めする。怠惰な者を戒め、小心な者を励まし、弱い者を助け、すべての人に対して寛容でありなさい。		5:14 We exhort you, brothers, admonish the disorderly, encourage the fainthearted, support the weak, be patient toward all.
5:15だれも悪をもって悪に報いないように心がけ、お互に、またみんなに対して、いつも善を追い求めなさい。		5:15 See that no one returns evil for evil to anyone, but always follow after that which is good, for one another, and for all.
5:16いつも喜んでいなさい。		5:16 Rejoice always.
5:17絶えず祈りなさい。		5:17 Pray without ceasing.
5:18すべての事について、感謝しなさい。これが、キリスト・イエスにあって、神があなたがたに求めておられることである。		5:18 In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.
5:19御霊を消してはいけない。		5:19 Don't quench the Spirit.
5:20預言を軽んじてはならない。		5:20 Don't despise prophesies.
5:21すべてのものを識別して、良いものを守り、		5:21 Test all things, and hold firmly that which is good.
5:22あらゆる種類の悪から遠ざかりなさい。		5:22 Abstain from every form of evil.
5:23どうか、平和の神ご自身が、あなたがたを全くきよめて下さるように。また、あなたがたの霊と心とからだとを完全に守って、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの来臨のときに、責められるところのない者にして下さるように。		5:23 May the God of peace himself sanctify you completely. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
5:24あなたがたを召されたかたは真実であられるから、このことをして下さるであろう。		5:24 He who calls you is faithful, who will also do it.
5:25兄弟たちよ。わたしたちのためにも、祈ってほしい。		5:25 Brothers, pray for us.
5:26すべての兄弟たちに、きよい接吻をもって、よろしく伝えてほしい。		5:26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.
5:27わたしは主によって命じる。この手紙を、みんなの兄弟に読み聞かせなさい。		5:27 I solemnly command you by the Lord that this letter be read to all the holy brothers.
5:28わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの恵みが、あなたがたと共にあるように。		5:28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
