1:1キリスト・イエスの僕たち、パウロとテモテから、ピリピにいる、キリスト・イエスにあるすべての聖徒たち、ならびに監督たちと執事たちへ。		1:1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Jesus Christ; To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers {or, superintendents, or bishops} and servants {Or, deacons}:
1:2わたしたちの父なる神と主イエス・キリストから、恵みと平安とが、あなたがたにあるように。		1:2 Grace to you, and peace from God, our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
1:3わたしはあなたがたを思うたびごとに、わたしの神に感謝し、		1:3 I thank my God whenever I remember you,
1:4あなたがた一同のために祈るとき、いつも喜びをもって祈り、		1:4 always in every request of mine on behalf of you all making my requests with joy,
1:5あなたがたが最初の日から今日に至るまで、福音にあずかっていることを感謝している。		1:5 for your partnership {The word translated "partnership" (koinonia) also means "fellowship" and "sharing."} in furtherance of the Good News from the first day until now;
1:6そして、あなたがたのうちに良いわざを始められたかたが、キリスト・イエスの日までにそれを完成して下さるにちがいないと、確信している。		1:6 being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.
1:7わたしが、あなたがた一同のために、そう考えるのは当然である。それは、わたしが獄に捕われている時にも、福音を弁明し立証する時にも、あなたがたをみな、共に恵みにあずかる者として、わたしの心に深く留めているからである。		1:7 It is even right for me to think this way on behalf of all of you, because I have you in my heart, because, both in my bonds and in the defense and confirmation of the Good News, you all are partakers with me of grace.
1:8わたしがキリスト・イエスの熱愛をもって、どんなに深くあなたがた一同を思っていることか、それを証明して下さるかたは神である。		1:8 For God is my witness, how I long after all of you in the tender mercies of Christ Jesus.
1:9わたしはこう祈る。あなたがたの愛が、深い知識において、するどい感覚において、いよいよ増し加わり、		1:9 This I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment;
1:10それによって、あなたがたが、何が重要であるかを判別することができ、キリストの日に備えて、純真で責められるところのないものとなり、		1:10 so that you may approve the things that are excellent; that you may be sincere and without offense to the day of Christ;
1:11イエス・キリストによる義の実に満たされて、神の栄光とほまれとをあらわすに至るように。		1:11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
1:12さて、兄弟たちよ。わたしの身に起った事が、むしろ福音の前進に役立つようになったことを、あなたがたに知ってもらいたい。		1:12 Now I desire to have you know, brothers, {The word for "brothers" here and where context allows may also be correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings."} that the things which happened to me have turned out rather to the progress of the Good News;
1:13すなわち、わたしが獄に捕われているのはキリストのためであることが、兵営全体にもそのほかのすべての人々にも明らかになり、		1:13 so that it became evident to the whole palace {or, praetorian} guard, and to all the rest, that my bonds are in Christ;
1:14そして兄弟たちのうち多くの者は、わたしの入獄によって主にある確信を得、恐れることなく、ますます勇敢に、神の言を語るようになった。		1:14 and that most of the brothers in the Lord, being confident through my bonds, are more abundantly bold to speak the word of God without fear.
1:15一方では、ねたみや闘争心からキリストを宣べ伝える者がおり、他方では善意からそうする者がいる。		1:15 Some indeed preach Christ even out of envy and strife, and some also out of good will.
1:16後者は、わたしが福音を弁明するために立てられていることを知り、愛の心でキリストを伝え、		1:16 The former insincerely preach Christ from selfish ambition, thinking that they add affliction to my chains;
1:17前者は、わたしの入獄の苦しみに更に患難を加えようと思って、純真な心からではなく、党派心からそうしている。		1:17 but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the Good News.
1:18すると、どうなのか。見えからであるにしても、真実からであるにしても、要するに、伝えられているのはキリストなのだから、わたしはそれを喜んでいるし、また喜ぶであろう。		1:18 What does it matter? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed. I rejoice in this, yes, and will rejoice.
1:19なぜなら、あなたがたの祈と、イエス・キリストの霊の助けとによって、この事がついには、わたしの救となることを知っているからである。		1:19 For I know that this will turn out to my salvation, through your supplication and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,
1:20そこで、わたしが切実な思いで待ち望むことは、わたしが、どんなことがあっても恥じることなく、かえって、いつものように今も、大胆に語ることによって、生きるにも死ぬにも、わたしの身によってキリストがあがめられることである。		1:20 according to my earnest expectation and hope, that I will in no way be disappointed, but with all boldness, as always, now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life, or by death.
1:21わたしにとっては、生きることはキリストであり、死ぬことは益である。		1:21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
1:22しかし、肉体において生きていることが、わたしにとっては実り多い働きになるのだとすれば、どちらを選んだらよいか、わたしにはわからない。		1:22 But if I live on in the flesh, this will bring fruit from my work; yet I don't know what I will choose.
1:23わたしは、これら二つのものの間に板ばさみになっている。わたしの願いを言えば、この世を去ってキリストと共にいることであり、実は、その方がはるかに望ましい。		1:23 But I am in a dilemma between the two, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.
1:24しかし、肉体にとどまっていることは、あなたがたのためには、さらに必要である。		1:24 Yet, to remain in the flesh is more needful for your sake.
1:25こう確信しているので、わたしは生きながらえて、あなたがた一同のところにとどまり、あなたがたの信仰を進ませ、その喜びを得させようと思う。		1:25 Having this confidence, I know that I will remain, yes, and remain with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith,
1:26そうなれば、わたしが再びあなたがたのところに行くので、あなたがたはわたしによってキリスト・イエスにある誇を増すことになろう。		1:26 that your rejoicing may abound in Christ Jesus in me through my presence with you again.
1:27ただ、あなたがたはキリストの福音にふさわしく生活しなさい。そして、わたしが行ってあなたがたに会うにしても、離れているにしても、あなたがたが一つの霊によって堅く立ち、一つ心になって福音の信仰のために力を合わせて戦い、		1:27 Only let your way of life be worthy of the Good News of Christ, that, whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your state, that you stand firm in one spirit, with one soul striving for the faith of the Good News;
1:28かつ、何事についても、敵対する者どもにろうばいさせられないでいる様子を、聞かせてほしい。このことは、彼らには滅びのしるし、あなたがたには救のしるしであって、それは神から来るのである。		1:28 and in nothing frightened by the adversaries, which is for them a proof of destruction, but to you of salvation, and that from God.
1:29あなたがたはキリストのために、ただ彼を信じることだけではなく、彼のために苦しむことをも賜わっている。		1:29 Because it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in him, but also to suffer on his behalf,
1:30あなたがたは、さきにわたしについて見、今またわたしについて聞いているのと同じ苦闘を、続けているのである。		1:30 having the same conflict which you saw in me, and now hear is in me.
2:1そこで、あなたがたに、キリストによる勧め、愛の励まし、御霊の交わり、熱愛とあわれみとが、いくらかでもあるなら、		2:1 If there is therefore any exhortation in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any tender mercies and compassion,
2:2どうか同じ思いとなり、同じ愛の心を持ち、心を合わせ、一つ思いになって、わたしの喜びを満たしてほしい。		2:2 make my joy full, by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind;
2:3何事も党派心や虚栄からするのでなく、へりくだった心をもって互に人を自分よりすぐれた者としなさい。		2:3 doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself;
2:4おのおの、自分のことばかりでなく、他人のことも考えなさい。		2:4 each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.
2:5キリスト・イエスにあっていだいているのと同じ思いを、あなたがたの間でも互に生かしなさい。		2:5 Have this in your mind, which was also in Christ Jesus,
2:6キリストは、神のかたちであられたが、神と等しくあることを固守すべき事とは思わず、		2:6 who, existing in the form of God, didn't consider equality with God a thing to be grasped,
2:7かえって、おのれをむなしうして僕のかたちをとり、人間の姿になられた。その有様は人と異ならず、		2:7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men.
2:8おのれを低くして、死に至るまで、しかも十字架の死に至るまで従順であられた。		2:8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, yes, the death of the cross.
2:9それゆえに、神は彼を高く引き上げ、すべての名にまさる名を彼に賜わった。		2:9 Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave to him the name which is above every name;
2:10それは、イエスの御名によって、天上のもの、地上のもの、地下のものなど、あらゆるものがひざをかがめ、		2:10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth,
2:11また、あらゆる舌が、「イエス・キリストは主である」と告白して、栄光を父なる神に帰するためである。		2:11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
2:12わたしの愛する者たちよ。そういうわけだから、あなたがたがいつも従順であったように、わたしが一緒にいる時だけでなく、いない今は、いっそう従順でいて、恐れおののいて自分の救の達成に努めなさい。		2:12 So then, my beloved, even as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
2:13あなたがたのうちに働きかけて、その願いを起させ、かつ実現に至らせるのは神であって、それは神のよしとされるところだからである。		2:13 For it is God who works in you both to will and to work, for his good pleasure.
2:14すべてのことを、つぶやかず疑わないでしなさい。		2:14 Do all things without murmurings and disputes,
2:15それは、あなたがたが責められるところのない純真な者となり、曲った邪悪な時代のただ中にあって、傷のない神の子となるためである。あなたがたは、いのちの言葉を堅く持って、彼らの間で星のようにこの世に輝いている。		2:15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you are seen as lights in the world,
2:16このようにして、キリストの日に、わたしは自分の走ったことがむだでなく、労したこともむだではなかったと誇ることができる。		2:16 holding up the word of life; that I may have something to boast in the day of Christ, that I didn't run in vain nor labor in vain.
2:17そして、たとい、あなたがたの信仰の供え物をささげる祭壇に、わたしの血をそそぐことがあっても、わたしは喜ぼう。あなたがた一同と共に喜ぼう。		2:17 Yes, and if I am poured out on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice, and rejoice with you all.
2:18同じように、あなたがたも喜びなさい。わたしと共に喜びなさい。		2:18 In the same way, you also rejoice, and rejoice with me.
2:19さて、わたしは、まもなくテモテをあなたがたのところに送りたいと、主イエスにあって願っている。それは、あなたがたの様子を知って、わたしも力づけられたいからである。		2:19 But I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered up when I know how you are doing.
2:20テモテのような心で、親身になってあなたがたのことを心配している者は、ほかにひとりもない。		2:20 For I have no one else like-minded, who will truly care about you.
2:21人はみな、自分のことを求めるだけで、キリスト・イエスのことは求めていない。		2:21 For they all seek their own, not the things of Jesus Christ.
2:22しかし、テモテの錬達ぶりは、あなたがたの知っているとおりである。すなわち、子が父に対するようにして、わたしと一緒に福音に仕えてきたのである。		2:22 But you know the proof of him, that, as a child serves a father, so he served with me in furtherance of the Good News.
2:23そこで、この人を、わたしの成行きがわかりしだい、すぐにでも、そちらへ送りたいと願っている。		2:23 Therefore I hope to send him at once, as soon as I see how it will go with me.
2:24わたし自身もまもなく行けるものと、主にあって確信している。		2:24 But I trust in the Lord that I myself also will come shortly.
2:25しかし、さしあたり、わたしの同労者で戦友である兄弟、また、あなたがたの使者としてわたしの窮乏を補ってくれたエパフロデトを、あなたがたのもとに送り返すことが必要だと思っている。		2:25 But I counted it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker, fellow soldier, and your apostle and servant of my need;
2:26彼は、あなたがた一同にしきりに会いたがっているからである。その上、自分の病気のことがあなたがたに聞えたので、彼は心苦しく思っている。		2:26 since he longed for you all, and was very troubled, because you had heard that he was sick.
2:27彼は実に、ひん死の病気にかかったが、神は彼をあわれんで下さった。彼ばかりではなく、わたしをもあわれんで下さったので、わたしは悲しみに悲しみを重ねないですんだのである。		2:27 For indeed he was sick, nearly to death, but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, that I might not have sorrow on sorrow.
2:28そこで、大急ぎで彼を送り返す。これで、あなたがたは彼と再び会って喜び、わたしもまた、心配を和らげることができよう。		2:28 I have sent him therefore the more diligently, that, when you see him again, you may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.
2:29こういうわけだから、大いに喜んで、主にあって彼を迎えてほしい。また、こうした人々は尊重せねばならない。		2:29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all joy, and hold such in honor,
2:30彼は、わたしに対してあなたがたが奉仕のできなかった分を補おうとして、キリストのわざのために命をかけ、死ぬばかりになったのである。		2:30 because for the work of Christ he came near to death, risking his life to supply that which was lacking in your service toward me.
3:1最後に、わたしの兄弟たちよ。主にあって喜びなさい。さきに書いたのと同じことをここで繰り返すが、それは、わたしには煩わしいことではなく、あなたがたには安全なことになる。		3:1 Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not tiresome, but for you it is safe.
3:2あの犬どもを警戒しなさい。悪い働き人たちを警戒しなさい。肉に割礼の傷をつけている人たちを警戒しなさい。		3:2 Beware of the dogs, beware of the evil workers, beware of the false circumcision.
3:3神の霊によって礼拝をし、キリスト・イエスを誇とし、肉を頼みとしないわたしたちこそ、割礼の者である。		3:3 For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh;
3:4もとより、肉の頼みなら、わたしにも無くはない。もし、だれかほかの人が肉を頼みとしていると言うなら、わたしはそれをもっと頼みとしている。		3:4 though I myself might have confidence even in the flesh. If any other man thinks that he has confidence in the flesh, I yet more:
3:5わたしは八日目に割礼を受けた者、イスラエルの民族に属する者、ベニヤミン族の出身、ヘブル人の中のヘブル人、律法の上ではパリサイ人、		3:5 circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee;
3:6熱心の点では教会の迫害者、律法の義については落ち度のない者である。		3:6 concerning zeal, persecuting the assembly; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, found blameless.
3:7しかし、わたしにとって益であったこれらのものを、キリストのゆえに損と思うようになった。		3:7 However, what things were gain to me, these have I counted loss for Christ.
3:8わたしは、更に進んで、わたしの主キリスト・イエスを知る知識の絶大な価値のゆえに、いっさいのものを損と思っている。キリストのゆえに、わたしはすべてを失ったが、それらのものを、ふん土のように思っている。それは、わたしがキリストを得るためであり、		3:8 Yes most certainly, and I count all things to be loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus, my Lord, for whom I suffered the loss of all things, and count them nothing but refuse, that I may gain Christ
3:9律法による自分の義ではなく、キリストを信じる信仰による義、すなわち、信仰に基く神からの義を受けて、キリストのうちに自分を見いだすようになるためである。		3:9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own, that which is of the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;
3:10すなわち、キリストとその復活の力とを知り、その苦難にあずかって、その死のさまとひとしくなり、		3:10 that I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, becoming conformed to his death;
3:11なんとかして死人のうちからの復活に達したいのである。		3:11 if by any means I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.
3:12わたしがすでにそれを得たとか、すでに完全な者になっているとか言うのではなく、ただ捕えようとして追い求めているのである。そうするのは、キリスト・イエスによって捕えられているからである。		3:12 Not that I have already obtained, or am already made perfect; but I press on, if it is so that I may take hold of that for which also I was taken hold of by Christ Jesus.
3:13兄弟たちよ。わたしはすでに捕えたとは思っていない。ただこの一事を努めている。すなわち、後のものを忘れ、前のものに向かってからだを伸ばしつつ、		3:13 Brothers, I don't regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before,
3:14目標を目ざして走り、キリスト・イエスにおいて上に召して下さる神の賞与を得ようと努めているのである。		3:14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
3:15だから、わたしたちの中で全き人たちは、そのように考えるべきである。しかし、あなたがたが違った考えを持っているなら、神はそのことも示して下さるであろう。		3:15 Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, think this way. If in anything you think otherwise, God will also reveal that to you.
3:16ただ、わたしたちは、達し得たところに従って進むべきである。		3:16 Nevertheless, to the extent that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule. Let us be of the same mind.
3:17兄弟たちよ。どうか、わたしにならう者となってほしい。また、あなたがたの模範にされているわたしたちにならって歩く人たちに、目をとめなさい。		3:17 Brothers, be imitators together of me, and note those who walk this way, even as you have us for an example.
3:18わたしがそう言うのは、キリストの十字架に敵対して歩いている者が多いからである。わたしは、彼らのことをしばしばあなたがたに話したが、今また涙を流して語る。		3:18 For many walk, of whom I told you often, and now tell you even weeping, as the enemies of the cross of Christ,
3:19彼らの最後は滅びである。彼らの神はその腹、彼らの栄光はその恥、彼らの思いは地上のことである。		3:19 whose end is destruction, whose god is the belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who think about earthly things.
3:20しかし、わたしたちの国籍は天にある。そこから、救主、主イエス・キリストのこられるのを、わたしたちは待ち望んでいる。		3:20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from where we also wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ;
3:21彼は、万物をご自身に従わせうる力の働きによって、わたしたちの卑しいからだを、ご自身の栄光のからだと同じかたちに変えて下さるであろう。		3:21 who will change the body of our humiliation to be conformed to the body of his glory, according to the working by which he is able even to subject all things to himself.
4:1だから、わたしの愛し慕っている兄弟たちよ。わたしの喜びであり冠である愛する者たちよ。このように、主にあって堅く立ちなさい。		4:1 Therefore, my brothers, beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand firm in the Lord, my beloved.
4:2わたしはユウオデヤに勧め、またスントケに勧める。どうか、主にあって一つ思いになってほしい。		4:2 I exhort Euodia, and I exhort Syntyche, to think the same way in the Lord.
4:3ついては、真実な協力者よ。あなたにお願いする。このふたりの女を助けてあげなさい。彼らは、「いのちの書」に名を書きとめられているクレメンスや、その他の同労者たちと協力して、福音のためにわたしと共に戦ってくれた女たちである。		4:3 Yes, I beg you also, true yokefellow, help these women, for they labored with me in the Good News, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.
4:4あなたがたは、主にあっていつも喜びなさい。繰り返して言うが、喜びなさい。		4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always! Again I will say, "Rejoice!"
4:5あなたがたの寛容を、みんなの人に示しなさい。主は近い。		4:5 Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.
4:6何事も思い煩ってはならない。ただ、事ごとに、感謝をもって祈と願いとをささげ、あなたがたの求めるところを神に申し上げるがよい。		4:6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.
4:7そうすれば、人知ではとうてい測り知ることのできない神の平安が、あなたがたの心と思いとを、キリスト・イエスにあって守るであろう。		4:7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
4:8最後に、兄弟たちよ。すべて真実なこと、すべて尊ぶべきこと、すべて正しいこと、すべて純真なこと、すべて愛すべきこと、すべてほまれあること、また徳といわれるもの、称賛に値するものがあれば、それらのものを心にとめなさい。		4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things.
4:9あなたがたが、わたしから学んだこと、受けたこと、聞いたこと、見たことは、これを実行しなさい。そうすれば、平和の神が、あなたがたと共にいますであろう。		4:9 The things which you learned, received, heard, and saw in me: do these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
4:10さて、わたしが主にあって大いに喜んでいるのは、わたしを思う心が、あなたがたに今またついに芽ばえてきたことである。実は、あなたがたは、わたしのことを心にかけてくれてはいたが、よい機会がなかったのである。		4:10 But I rejoice in the Lord greatly, that now at length you have revived your thought for me; in which you did indeed take thought, but you lacked opportunity.
4:11わたしは乏しいから、こう言うのではない。わたしは、どんな境遇にあっても、足ることを学んだ。		4:11 Not that I speak in respect to lack, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content in it.
4:12わたしは貧に処する道を知っており、富におる道も知っている。わたしは、飽くことにも飢えることにも、富むことにも乏しいことにも、ありとあらゆる境遇に処する秘けつを心得ている。		4:12 I know how to be humbled, and I know also how to abound. In everything and in all things I have learned the secret both to be filled and to be hungry, both to abound and to be in need.
4:13わたしを強くして下さるかたによって、何事でもすることができる。		4:13 I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.
4:14しかし、あなたがたは、よくもわたしと患難を共にしてくれた。		4:14 However you did well that you shared in my affliction.
4:15ピリピの人たちよ。あなたがたも知っているとおり、わたしが福音を宣伝し始めたころ、マケドニヤから出かけて行った時、物のやりとりをしてわたしの働きに参加した教会は、あなたがたのほかには全く無かった。		4:15 You yourselves also know, you Philippians, that in the beginning of the Good News, when I departed from Macedonia, no assembly shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving but you only.
4:16またテサロニケでも、一再ならず、物を送ってわたしの欠乏を補ってくれた。		4:16 For even in Thessalonica you sent once and again to my need.
4:17わたしは、贈り物を求めているのではない。わたしの求めているのは、あなたがたの勘定をふやしていく果実なのである。		4:17 Not that I seek for the gift, but I seek for the fruit that increases to your account.
4:18わたしは、すべての物を受けてあり余るほどである。エパフロデトから、あなたがたの贈り物をいただいて、飽き足りている。それは、かんばしいかおりであり、神の喜んで受けて下さる供え物である。		4:18 But I have all things, and abound. I am filled, having received from Epaphroditus the things that came from you, a sweet-smelling fragrance, an acceptable and well-pleasing sacrifice to God.
4:19わたしの神は、ご自身の栄光の富の中から、あなたがたのいっさいの必要を、キリスト・イエスにあって満たして下さるであろう。		4:19 My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
4:20わたしたちの父なる神に、栄光が世々限りなくあるように、アァメン。		4:20 Now to our God and Father be the glory forever and ever! Amen.
