1:1人々からでもなく、人によってでもなく、イエス・キリストと彼を死人の中からよみがえらせた父なる神とによって立てられた使徒パウロ、		1:1 Paul, an apostle (not from men, neither through man, but through Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead),
1:2ならびにわたしと共にいる兄弟たち一同から、ガラテヤの諸教会へ。		1:2 and all the brothers {The word for "brothers" here and where context allows may also be correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings."} who are with me, to the assemblies of Galatia:
1:3わたしたちの父なる神と主イエス・キリストから、恵みと平安とが、あなたがたにあるように。		1:3 Grace to you and peace from God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ,
1:4キリストは、わたしたちの父なる神の御旨に従い、わたしたちを今の悪の世から救い出そうとして、ご自身をわたしたちの罪のためにささげられたのである。		1:4 who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us out of this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father--
1:5栄光が世々限りなく神にあるように、アァメン。		1:5 to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
1:6あなたがたがこんなにも早く、あなたがたをキリストの恵みの内へお招きになったかたから離れて、違った福音に落ちていくことが、わたしには不思議でならない。		1:6 I marvel that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ to a different "good news";
1:7それは福音というべきものではなく、ただ、ある種の人々があなたがたをかき乱し、キリストの福音を曲げようとしているだけのことである。		1:7 and there isn't another "good news." Only there are some who trouble you, and want to pervert the Good News of Christ.
1:8しかし、たといわたしたちであろうと、天からの御使であろうと、わたしたちが宣べ伝えた福音に反することをあなたがたに宣べ伝えるなら、その人はのろわるべきである。		1:8 But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you any "good news" other than that which we preached to you, let him be cursed.
1:9わたしたちが前に言っておいたように、今わたしは重ねて言う。もしある人が、あなたがたの受けいれた福音に反することを宣べ伝えているなら、その人はのろわるべきである。		1:9 As we have said before, so I now say again: if any man preaches to you any "good news" other than that which you received, let him be cursed.
1:10今わたしは、人に喜ばれようとしているのか、それとも、神に喜ばれようとしているのか。あるいは、人の歓心を買おうと努めているのか。もし、今もなお人の歓心を買おうとしているとすれば、わたしはキリストの僕ではあるまい。		1:10 For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? For if I were still pleasing men, I wouldn't be a servant of Christ.
1:11兄弟たちよ。あなたがたに、はっきり言っておく。わたしが宣べ伝えた福音は人間によるものではない。		1:11 But I make known to you, brothers, concerning the Good News which was preached by me, that it is not according to man.
1:12わたしは、それを人間から受けたのでも教えられたのでもなく、ただイエス・キリストの啓示によったのである。		1:12 For neither did I receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came to me through revelation of Jesus Christ.
1:13ユダヤ教を信じていたころのわたしの行動については、あなたがたはすでによく聞いている。すなわち、わたしは激しく神の教会を迫害し、また荒しまわっていた。		1:13 For you have heard of my way of living in time past in the Jews' religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the assembly of God, and ravaged it.
1:14そして、同国人の中でわたしと同年輩の多くの者にまさってユダヤ教に精進し、先祖たちの言伝えに対して、だれよりもはるかに熱心であった。		1:14 I advanced in the Jews' religion beyond many of my own age among my countrymen, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers.
1:15ところが、母の胎内にある時からわたしを聖別し、み恵みをもってわたしをお召しになったかたが、		1:15 But when it was the good pleasure of God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me through his grace,
1:16異邦人の間に宣べ伝えさせるために、御子をわたしの内に啓示して下さった時、わたしは直ちに、血肉に相談もせず、		1:16 to reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I didn't immediately confer with flesh and blood,
1:17また先輩の使徒たちに会うためにエルサレムにも上らず、アラビヤに出て行った。それから再びダマスコに帰った。		1:17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia. Then I returned to Damascus.
1:18その後三年たってから、わたしはケパをたずねてエルサレムに上り、彼のもとに十五日間、滞在した。		1:18 Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Peter, and stayed with him fifteen days.
1:19しかし、主の兄弟ヤコブ以外には、ほかのどの使徒にも会わなかった。		1:19 But of the other apostles I saw no one, except James, the Lord's brother.
1:20ここに書いていることは、神のみまえで言うが、決して偽りではない。		1:20 Now about the things which I write to you, behold, before God, I'm not lying.
1:21その後、わたしはシリヤとキリキヤとの地方に行った。		1:21 Then I came to the regions of Syria and Cilicia.
1:22しかし、キリストにあるユダヤの諸教会には、顔を知られていなかった。		1:22 I was still unknown by face to the assemblies of Judea which were in Christ,
1:23ただ彼らは、「かつて自分たちを迫害した者が、以前には撲滅しようとしていたその信仰を、今は宣べ伝えている」と聞き、		1:23 but they only heard: "He who once persecuted us now preaches the faith that he once tried to destroy."
1:24わたしのことで、神をほめたたえた。		1:24 And they glorified God in me.
2:1その後十四年たってから、わたしはバルナバと一緒に、テトスをも連れて、再びエルサレムに上った。		2:1 Then after a period of fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus also with me.
2:2そこに上ったのは、啓示によってである。そして、わたしが異邦人の間に宣べ伝えている福音を、人々に示し、「重だった人たち」には個人的に示した。それは、わたしが現に走っており、またすでに走ってきたことが、むだにならないためである。		2:2 I went up by revelation, and I laid before them the Good News which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately before those who were respected, for fear that I might be running, or had run, in vain.
2:3しかし、わたしが連れていたテトスでさえ、ギリシヤ人であったのに、割礼をしいられなかった。		2:3 But not even Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised.
2:4それは、忍び込んできたにせ兄弟らがいたので彼らが忍び込んできたのは、キリスト・イエスにあって持っているわたしたちの自由をねらって、わたしたちを奴隷にするためであった。		2:4 This was because of the false brothers secretly brought in, who stole in to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage;
2:5わたしたちは、福音の真理があなたがたのもとに常にとどまっているように、瞬時も彼らの強要に屈服しなかった。		2:5 to whom we gave no place in the way of subjection, not for an hour, that the truth of the Good News might continue with you.
2:6そして、かの「重だった人たち」からは彼らがどんな人であったにしても、それは、わたしには全く問題ではない。神は人を分け隔てなさらないのだから事実、かの「重だった人たち」は、わたしに何も加えることをしなかった。		2:6 But from those who were reputed to be important (whatever they were, it makes no difference to me; God doesn't show partiality to man)--they, I say, who were respected imparted nothing to me,
2:7それどころか、彼らは、ペテロが割礼の者への福音をゆだねられているように、わたしには無割礼の者への福音がゆだねられていることを認め、		2:7 but to the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the Good News for the uncircumcision, even as Peter with the Good News for the circumcision
2:8（というのは、ペテロに働きかけて割礼の者への使徒の務につかせたかたは、わたしにも働きかけて、異邦人につかわして下さったからである）、		2:8 (for he who appointed Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision appointed me also to the Gentiles);
2:9かつ、わたしに賜わった恵みを知って、柱として重んじられているヤコブとケパとヨハネとは、わたしとバルナバとに、交わりの手を差し伸べた。そこで、わたしたちは異邦人に行き、彼らは割礼の者に行くことになったのである。		2:9 and when they perceived the grace that was given to me, James and Cephas and John, they who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcision.
2:10ただ一つ、わたしたちが貧しい人々をかえりみるようにとのことであったが、わたしはもとより、この事のためにも大いに努めてきたのである。		2:10 They only asked us to remember the poor--which very thing I was also zealous to do.
2:11ところが、ケパがアンテオケにきたとき、彼に非難すべきことがあったので、わたしは面とむかって彼をなじった。		2:11 But when Peter came to Antioch, I resisted him to his face, because he stood condemned.
2:12というのは、ヤコブのもとからある人々が来るまでは、彼は異邦人と食を共にしていたのに、彼らがきてからは、割礼の者どもを恐れ、しだいに身を引いて離れて行ったからである。		2:12 For before some people came from James, he ate with the Gentiles. But when they came, he drew back and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision.
2:13そして、ほかのユダヤ人たちも彼と共に偽善の行為をし、バルナバまでがそのような偽善に引きずり込まれた。		2:13 And the rest of the Jews joined him in his hypocrisy; so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy.
2:14彼らが福音の真理に従ってまっすぐに歩いていないのを見て、わたしは衆人の面前でケパに言った、「あなたは、ユダヤ人であるのに、自分自身はユダヤ人のように生活しないで、異邦人のように生活していながら、どうして異邦人にユダヤ人のようになることをしいるのか」。		2:14 But when I saw that they didn't walk uprightly according to the truth of the Good News, I said to Peter before them all, "If you, being a Jew, live as the Gentiles do, and not as the Jews do, why do you compel the Gentiles to live as the Jews do?
2:15わたしたちは生れながらのユダヤ人であって、異邦人なる罪人ではないが、		2:15 "We, being Jews by nature, and not Gentile sinners,
2:16人の義とされるのは律法の行いによるのではなく、ただキリスト・イエスを信じる信仰によることを認めて、わたしたちもキリスト・イエスを信じたのである。それは、律法の行いによるのではなく、キリストを信じる信仰によって義とされるためである。なぜなら、律法の行いによっては、だれひとり義とされることがないからである。		2:16 yet knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the law, because no flesh will be justified by the works of the law.
2:17しかし、キリストにあって義とされることを求めることによって、わたしたち自身が罪人であるとされるのなら、キリストは罪に仕える者なのであろうか。断じてそうではない。		2:17 But if, while we sought to be justified in Christ, we ourselves also were found sinners, is Christ a servant of sin? Certainly not!
2:18もしわたしが、いったん打ちこわしたものを、再び建てるとすれば、それこそ、自分が違反者であることを表明することになる。		2:18 For if I build up again those things which I destroyed, I prove myself a law-breaker.
2:19わたしは、神に生きるために、律法によって律法に死んだ。わたしはキリストと共に十字架につけられた。		2:19 For I, through the law, died to the law, that I might live to God.
2:20生きているのは、もはや、わたしではない。キリストが、わたしのうちに生きておられるのである。しかし、わたしがいま肉にあって生きているのは、わたしを愛し、わたしのためにご自身をささげられた神の御子を信じる信仰によって、生きているのである。		2:20 I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I that live, but Christ living in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me.
2:21わたしは、神の恵みを無にはしない。もし、義が律法によって得られるとすれば、キリストの死はむだであったことになる。		2:21 I don't make void the grace of God. For if righteousness is through the law, then Christ died for nothing!"
3:1ああ、物わかりのわるいガラテヤ人よ。十字架につけられたイエス・キリストが、あなたがたの目の前に描き出されたのに、いったい、だれがあなたがたを惑わしたのか。		3:1 Foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you not to obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was openly set forth among you as crucified?
3:2わたしは、ただこの一つの事を、あなたがたに聞いてみたい。あなたがたが御霊を受けたのは、律法を行ったからか、それとも、聞いて信じたからか。		3:2 I just want to learn this from you. Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by hearing of faith?
3:3あなたがたは、そんなに物わかりがわるいのか。御霊で始めたのに、今になって肉で仕上げるというのか。		3:3 Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now completed in the flesh?
3:4あれほどの大きな経験をしたことは、むだであったのか。まさか、むだではあるまい。		3:4 Did you suffer so many things in vain, if it is indeed in vain?
3:5すると、あなたがたに御霊を賜い、力あるわざをあなたがたの間でなされたのは、律法を行ったからか、それとも、聞いて信じたからか。		3:5 He therefore who supplies the Spirit to you, and works miracles among you, does he do it by the works of the law, or by hearing of faith?
3:6このように、アブラハムは「神を信じた。それによって、彼は義と認められた」のである。		3:6 Even as Abraham "believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness."
3:7だから、信仰による者こそアブラハムの子であることを、知るべきである。		3:7 Know therefore that those who are of faith, the same are children of Abraham.
3:8聖書は、神が異邦人を信仰によって義とされることを、あらかじめ知って、アブラハムに、「あなたによって、すべての国民は祝福されるであろう」との良い知らせを、予告したのである。		3:8 The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the Good News beforehand to Abraham, saying, "In you all the nations will be blessed." {Genesis 12:3; 18:18; 22:18}
3:9このように、信仰による者は、信仰の人アブラハムと共に、祝福を受けるのである。		3:9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed with the faithful Abraham.
3:10いったい、律法の行いによる者は、皆のろいの下にある。「律法の書に書いてあるいっさいのことを守らず、これを行わない者は、皆のろわれる」と書いてあるからである。		3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse. For it is written, "Cursed is everyone who doesn't continue in all things that are written in the book of the law, to do them." {Deuteronomy 27:26}
3:11そこで、律法によっては、神のみまえに義とされる者はひとりもないことが、明らかである。なぜなら、「信仰による義人は生きる」からである。		3:11 Now that no man is justified by the law before God is evident, for, "The righteous will live by faith." {Habakkuk 2:4}
3:12律法は信仰に基いているものではない。かえって、「律法を行う者は律法によって生きる」のである。		3:12 The law is not of faith, but, "The man who does them will live by them." {Leviticus 18:5}
3:13キリストは、わたしたちのためにのろいとなって、わたしたちを律法ののろいからあがない出して下さった。聖書に、「木にかけられる者は、すべてのろわれる」と書いてある。		3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree," {Deuteronomy 21:23}
3:14それは、アブラハムの受けた祝福が、イエス・キリストにあって異邦人に及ぶためであり、約束された御霊を、わたしたちが信仰によって受けるためである。		3:14 that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Christ Jesus; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
3:15兄弟たちよ。世のならわしを例にとって言おう。人間の遺言でさえ、いったん作成されたら、これを無効にしたり、これに付け加えたりすることは、だれにもできない。		3:15 Brothers, speaking of human terms, though it is only a man's covenant, yet when it has been confirmed, no one makes it void, or adds to it.
3:16さて、約束は、アブラハムと彼の子孫とに対してなされたのである。それは、多数をさして「子孫たちとに」と言わずに、ひとりをさして「あなたの子孫とに」と言っている。これは、キリストのことである。		3:16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He doesn't say, "To seeds," as of many, but as of one, "To your seed," {Genesis 12:7; 13:15; 24:7} which is Christ.
3:17わたしの言う意味は、こうである。神によってあらかじめ立てられた契約が、四百三十年の後にできた律法によって破棄されて、その約束がむなしくなるようなことはない。		3:17 Now I say this. A covenant confirmed beforehand by God in Christ, the law, which came four hundred thirty years after, does not annul, so as to make the promise of no effect.
3:18もし相続が、律法に基いてなされるとすれば、もはや約束に基いたものではない。ところが事実、神は約束によって、相続の恵みをアブラハムに賜わったのである。		3:18 For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no more of promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by promise.
3:19それでは、律法はなんであるか。それは違反を促すため、あとから加えられたのであって、約束されていた子孫が来るまで存続するだけのものであり、かつ、天使たちをとおし、仲介者の手によって制定されたものにすぎない。		3:19 What then is the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the seed should come to whom the promise has been made. It was ordained through angels by the hand of a mediator.
3:20仲介者なるものは、一方だけに属する者ではない。しかし、神はひとりである。		3:20 Now a mediator is not between one, but God is one.
3:21では、律法は神の約束と相いれないものか。断じてそうではない。もし人を生かす力のある律法が与えられていたとすれば、義はたしかに律法によって実現されたであろう。		3:21 Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could make alive, most certainly righteousness would have been of the law.
3:22しかし、約束が、信じる人々にイエス・キリストに対する信仰によって与えられるために、聖書はすべての人を罪の下に閉じ込めたのである。		3:22 But the Scriptures imprisoned all things under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
3:23しかし、信仰が現れる前には、わたしたちは律法の下で監視されており、やがて啓示される信仰の時まで閉じ込められていた。		3:23 But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, confined for the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
3:24このようにして律法は、信仰によって義とされるために、わたしたちをキリストに連れて行く養育掛となったのである。		3:24 So that the law has become our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
3:25しかし、いったん信仰が現れた以上、わたしたちは、もはや養育掛のもとにはいない。		3:25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.
3:26あなたがたはみな、キリスト・イエスにある信仰によって、神の子なのである。		3:26 For you are all children of God, through faith in Christ Jesus.
3:27キリストに合うバプテスマを受けたあなたがたは、皆キリストを着たのである。		3:27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
3:28もはや、ユダヤ人もギリシヤ人もなく、奴隷も自由人もなく、男も女もない。あなたがたは皆、キリスト・イエスにあって一つだからである。		3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
3:29もしキリストのものであるなら、あなたがたはアブラハムの子孫であり、約束による相続人なのである。		3:29 If you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed and heirs according to promise.
4:1わたしの言う意味は、こうである。相続人が子供である間は、全財産の持ち主でありながら、僕となんの差別もなく、		4:1 But I say that so long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a bondservant, though he is lord of all;
4:2父親の定めた時期までは、管理人や後見人の監督の下に置かれているのである。		4:2 but is under guardians and stewards until the day appointed by the father.
4:3それと同じく、わたしたちも子供であった時には、いわゆるこの世のもろもろの霊力の下に、縛られていた者であった。		4:3 So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental principles of the world.
4:4しかし、時の満ちるに及んで、神は御子を女から生れさせ、律法の下に生れさせて、おつかわしになった。		4:4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent out his Son, born to a woman, born under the law,
4:5それは、律法の下にある者をあがない出すため、わたしたちに子たる身分を授けるためであった。		4:5 that he might redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of children.
4:6このように、あなたがたは子であるのだから、神はわたしたちの心の中に、「アバ、父よ」と呼ぶ御子の霊を送って下さったのである。		4:6 And because you are children, God sent out the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, "Abba, {Abba is a Greek spelling for the Aramaic word for "Father" or "Daddy" used in a familiar, respectful, and loving way.} Father!"
4:7したがって、あなたがたはもはや僕ではなく、子である。子である以上、また神による相続人である。		4:7 So you are no longer a bondservant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
4:8神を知らなかった当時、あなたがたは、本来神ならぬ神々の奴隷になっていた。		4:8 However at that time, not knowing God, you were in bondage to those who by nature are not gods.
4:9しかし、今では神を知っているのに、否、むしろ神に知られているのに、どうして、あの無力で貧弱な、もろもろの霊力に逆もどりして、またもや、新たにその奴隷になろうとするのか。		4:9 But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, why do you turn back again to the weak and miserable elemental principles, to which you desire to be in bondage all over again?
4:10あなたがたは、日や月や季節や年などを守っている。		4:10 You observe days, months, seasons, and years.
4:11わたしは、あなたがたのために努力してきたことが、あるいは、むだになったのではないかと、あなたがたのことが心配でならない。		4:11 I am afraid for you, that I might have wasted my labor for you.
4:12兄弟たちよ。お願いする。どうか、わたしのようになってほしい。わたしも、あなたがたのようになったのだから。あなたがたは、一度もわたしに対して不都合なことをしたことはない。		4:12 I beg you, brothers, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You did me no wrong,
4:13あなたがたも知っているとおり、最初わたしがあなたがたに福音を伝えたのは、わたしの肉体が弱っていたためであった。		4:13 but you know that because of weakness of the flesh I preached the Good News to you the first time.
4:14そして、わたしの肉体にはあなたがたにとって試錬となるものがあったのに、それを卑しめもせず、またきらいもせず、かえってわたしを、神の使かキリスト・イエスかでもあるように、迎えてくれた。		4:14 That which was a temptation to you in my flesh, you didn't despise nor reject; but you received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.
4:15その時のあなたがたの感激は、今どこにあるのか。はっきり言うが、あなたがたは、できることなら、自分の目をえぐり出してでも、わたしにくれたかったのだ。		4:15 What was the blessing you enjoyed? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me.
4:16それだのに、真理を語ったために、わたしはあなたがたの敵になったのか。		4:16 So then, have I become your enemy by telling you the truth?
4:17彼らがあなたがたに対して熱心なのは、善意からではない。むしろ、自分らに熱心にならせるために、あなたがたをわたしから引き離そうとしているのである。		4:17 They zealously seek you in no good way. No, they desire to alienate you, that you may seek them.
4:18わたしがあなたがたの所にいる時だけでなく、いつも、良いことについて熱心に慕われるのは、良いことである。		4:18 But it is always good to be zealous in a good cause, and not only when I am present with you.
4:19ああ、わたしの幼な子たちよ。あなたがたの内にキリストの形ができるまでは、わたしは、またもや、あなたがたのために産みの苦しみをする。		4:19 My little children, of whom I am again in travail until Christ is formed in you--
4:20できることなら、わたしは今あなたがたの所にいて、語調を変えて話してみたい。わたしは、あなたがたのことで、途方にくれている。		4:20 but I could wish to be present with you now, and to change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.
4:21律法の下にとどまっていたいと思う人たちよ。わたしに答えなさい。あなたがたは律法の言うところを聞かないのか。		4:21 Tell me, you that desire to be under the law, don't you listen to the law?
4:22そのしるすところによると、アブラハムにふたりの子があったが、ひとりは女奴隷から、ひとりは自由の女から生れた。		4:22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the handmaid, and one by the free woman.
4:23女奴隷の子は肉によって生れたのであり、自由の女の子は約束によって生れたのであった。		4:23 However, the son by the handmaid was born according to the flesh, but the son by the free woman was born through promise.
4:24さて、この物語は比喩としてみられる。すなわち、この女たちは二つの契約をさす。そのひとりはシナイ山から出て、奴隷となる者を産む。ハガルがそれである。		4:24 These things contain an allegory, for these are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children to bondage, which is Hagar.
4:25ハガルといえば、アラビヤではシナイ山のことで、今のエルサレムに当る。なぜなら、それは子たちと共に、奴隷となっているからである。		4:25 For this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and answers to the Jerusalem that exists now, for she is in bondage with her children.
4:26しかし、上なるエルサレムは、自由の女であって、わたしたちの母をさす。		4:26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
4:27すなわち、こう書いてある、「喜べ、不妊の女よ。声をあげて喜べ、産みの苦しみを知らない女よ。ひとり者となっている女は多くの子を産み、その数は、夫ある女の子らよりも多い」。		4:27 For it is written, "Rejoice, you barren who don't bear. Break forth and shout, you that don't travail. For more are the children of the desolate than of her who has a husband." {Isaiah 54:1}
4:28兄弟たちよ。あなたがたは、イサクのように、約束の子である。		4:28 Now we, brothers, as Isaac was, are children of promise.
4:29しかし、その当時、肉によって生れた者が、霊によって生れた者を迫害したように、今でも同様である。		4:29 But as then, he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now.
4:30しかし、聖書はなんと言っているか。「女奴隷とその子とを追い出せ。女奴隷の子は、自由の女の子と共に相続をしてはならない」とある。		4:30 However what does the Scripture say? "Throw out the handmaid and her son, for the son of the handmaid will not inherit with the son of the free woman." {Genesis 21:10}
4:31だから、兄弟たちよ。わたしたちは女奴隷の子ではなく、自由の女の子なのである。		4:31 So then, brothers, we are not children of a handmaid, but of the free woman.
5:1自由を得させるために、キリストはわたしたちを解放して下さったのである。だから、堅く立って、二度と奴隷のくびきにつながれてはならない。		5:1 Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and don't be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
5:2見よ、このパウロがあなたがたに言う。もし割礼を受けるなら、キリストはあなたがたに用のないものになろう。		5:2 Behold, I, Paul, tell you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will profit you nothing.
5:3割礼を受けようとするすべての人たちに、もう一度言っておく。そういう人たちは、律法の全部を行う義務がある。		5:3 Yes, I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.
5:4律法によって義とされようとするあなたがたは、キリストから離れてしまっている。恵みから落ちている。		5:4 You are alienated from Christ, you who desire to be justified by the law. You have fallen away from grace.
5:5わたしたちは、御霊の助けにより、信仰によって義とされる望みを強くいだいている。		5:5 For we, through the Spirit, by faith wait for the hope of righteousness.
5:6キリスト・イエスにあっては、割礼があってもなくても、問題ではない。尊いのは、愛によって働く信仰だけである。		5:6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision amounts to anything, nor uncircumcision, but faith working through love.
5:7あなたがたはよく走り続けてきたのに、だれが邪魔をして、真理にそむかせたのか。		5:7 You were running well! Who interfered with you that you should not obey the truth?
5:8そのような勧誘は、あなたがたを召されたかたから出たものではない。		5:8 This persuasion is not from him who calls you.
5:9少しのパン種でも、粉のかたまり全体をふくらませる。		5:9 A little yeast grows through the whole lump.
5:10あなたがたはいささかもわたしと違った思いをいだくことはないと、主にあって信頼している。しかし、あなたがたを動揺させている者は、それがだれであろうと、さばきを受けるであろう。		5:10 I have confidence toward you in the Lord that you will think no other way. But he who troubles you will bear his judgment, whoever he is.
5:11兄弟たちよ。わたしがもし今でも割礼を宣べ伝えていたら、どうして、いまなお迫害されるはずがあろうか。そうしていたら、十字架のつまずきは、なくなっているであろう。		5:11 But I, brothers, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still persecuted? Then the stumbling block of the cross has been removed.
5:12あなたがたの煽動者どもは、自ら不具になるがよかろう。		5:12 I wish that those who disturb you would cut themselves off.
5:13兄弟たちよ。あなたがたが召されたのは、実に、自由を得るためである。ただ、その自由を、肉の働く機会としないで、愛をもって互に仕えなさい。		5:13 For you, brothers, were called for freedom. Only don't use your freedom for gain to the flesh, but through love be servants to one another.
5:14律法の全体は、「自分を愛するように、あなたの隣り人を愛せよ」というこの一句に尽きるからである。		5:14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, in this: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." {Leviticus 19:18}
5:15気をつけるがよい。もし互にかみ合い、食い合っているなら、あなたがたは互に滅ぼされてしまうだろう。		5:15 But if you bite and devour one another, be careful that you don't consume one another.
5:16わたしは命じる、御霊によって歩きなさい。そうすれば、決して肉の欲を満たすことはない。		5:16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you won't fulfill the lust of the flesh.
5:17なぜなら、肉の欲するところは御霊に反し、また御霊の欲するところは肉に反するからである。こうして、二つのものは互に相さからい、その結果、あなたがたは自分でしようと思うことを、することができないようになる。		5:17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, that you may not do the things that you desire.
5:18もしあなたがたが御霊に導かれるなら、律法の下にはいない。		5:18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
5:19肉の働きは明白である。すなわち、不品行、汚れ、好色、		5:19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious, which are: adultery, sexual immorality, uncleanness, lustfulness,
5:20偶像礼拝、まじない、敵意、争い、そねみ、怒り、党派心、分裂、分派、		5:20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousies, outbursts of anger, rivalries, divisions, heresies,
5:21ねたみ、泥酔、宴楽、および、そのたぐいである。わたしは以前も言ったように、今も前もって言っておく。このようなことを行う者は、神の国をつぐことがない。		5:21 envyings, murders, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these; of which I forewarn you, even as I also forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God.
5:22しかし、御霊の実は、愛、喜び、平和、寛容、慈愛、善意、忠実、		5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, {or, faithfulness}
5:23柔和、自制であって、これらを否定する律法はない。		5:23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
5:24キリスト・イエスに属する者は、自分の肉を、その情と欲と共に十字架につけてしまったのである。		5:24 Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts.
5:25もしわたしたちが御霊によって生きるのなら、また御霊によって進もうではないか。		5:25 If we live by the Spirit, let's also walk by the Spirit.
5:26互にいどみ合い、互にねたみ合って、虚栄に生きてはならない。		5:26 Let's not become conceited, provoking one another, and envying one another.
6:1兄弟たちよ。もしもある人が罪過に陥っていることがわかったなら、霊の人であるあなたがたは、柔和な心をもって、その人を正しなさい。それと同時に、もしか自分自身も誘惑に陥ることがありはしないかと、反省しなさい。		6:1 Brothers, even if a man is caught in some fault, you who are spiritual must restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; looking to yourself so that you also aren't tempted.
6:2互に重荷を負い合いなさい。そうすれば、あなたがたはキリストの律法を全うするであろう。		6:2 Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
6:3もしある人が、事実そうでないのに、自分が何か偉い者であるように思っているとすれば、その人は自分を欺いているのである。		6:3 For if a man thinks himself to be something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.
6:4ひとりびとり、自分の行いを検討してみるがよい。そうすれば、自分だけには誇ることができても、ほかの人には誇れなくなるであろう。		6:4 But let each man test his own work, and then he will take pride in himself and not in his neighbor.
6:5人はそれぞれ、自分自身の重荷を負うべきである。		6:5 For each man will bear his own burden.
6:6御言を教えてもらう人は、教える人と、すべて良いものを分け合いなさい。		6:6 But let him who is taught in the word share all good things with him who teaches.
6:7まちがってはいけない、神は侮られるようなかたではない。人は自分のまいたものを、刈り取ることになる。		6:7 Don't be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.
6:8すなわち、自分の肉にまく者は、肉から滅びを刈り取り、霊にまく者は、霊から永遠のいのちを刈り取るであろう。		6:8 For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption. But he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
6:9わたしたちは、善を行うことに、うみ疲れてはならない。たゆまないでいると、時が来れば刈り取るようになる。		6:9 Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don't give up.
6:10だから、機会のあるごとに、だれに対しても、とくに信仰の仲間に対して、善を行おうではないか。		6:10 So then, as we have opportunity, let's do what is good toward all men, and especially toward those who are of the household of the faith.
6:11ごらんなさい。わたし自身いま筆をとって、こんなに大きい字で、あなたがたに書いていることを。		6:11 See with what large letters I write to you with my own hand.
6:12いったい、肉において見えを飾ろうとする者たちは、キリスト・イエスの十字架のゆえに、迫害を受けたくないばかりに、あなたがたにしいて割礼を受けさせようとする。		6:12 As many as desire to look good in the flesh, they compel you to be circumcised; only that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ.
6:13事実、割礼のあるもの自身が律法を守らず、ただ、あなたがたの肉について誇りたいために、割礼を受けさせようとしているのである。		6:13 For even they who receive circumcision don't keep the law themselves, but they desire to have you circumcised, that they may boast in your flesh.
6:14しかし、わたし自身には、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの十字架以外に、誇とするものは、断じてあってはならない。この十字架につけられて、この世はわたしに対して死に、わたしもこの世に対して死んでしまったのである。		6:14 But far be it from me to boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
6:15割礼のあるなしは問題ではなく、ただ、新しく造られることこそ、重要なのである。		6:15 For in Christ Jesus neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.
6:16この法則に従って進む人々の上に、平和とあわれみとがあるように。また、神のイスラエルの上にあるように。		6:16 As many as walk by this rule, peace and mercy be on them, and on God's Israel.
6:17だれも今後は、わたしに煩いをかけないでほしい。わたしは、イエスの焼き印を身に帯びているのだから。		6:17 From now on, let no one cause me any trouble, for I bear the marks of the Lord Jesus branded on my body.
6:18兄弟たちよ。わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの恵みが、あなたがたの霊と共にあるように、アァメン。		6:18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.
