| 2:6そこには、ユダヤ人のきよめのならわしに従って、それぞれ四、五斗もはいる石の水がめが、六つ置いてあった。 | 2:6 Now there were six water pots of stone set there after the Jews' way of purifying, containing two or three metretes {2 to 3 metretes is about 20 to 30 U. S. Gallons, or 75 to 115 litres.} apiece. | |

| 2:15なわでむちを造り、羊も牛もみな宮から追いだし、両替人の金を散らし、その台をひっくりかえし、 | 2:15 He made a whip of cords, and threw all out of the temple, both the sheep and the oxen; and he poured out the changers' money, and overthrew their tables. | |
| 2:16はとを売る人々には「これらのものを持って、ここから出て行け。わたしの父の家を商売の家とするな」と言われた。 | 2:16 To those who sold the doves, he said, "Take these things out of here! Don't make my Father's house a marketplace!" | |
| 2:17弟子たちは、「あなたの家を思う熱心が、わたしを食いつくすであろう」と書いてあることを思い出した。 | 2:17 His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for your house will eat me up." {Psalm 69:9} | |
| 2:18そこで、ユダヤ人はイエスに言った、「こんなことをするからには、どんなしるしをわたしたちに見せてくれますか」。 | 2:18 The Jews therefore answered him, "What sign do you show us, seeing that you do these things?" | |

| 2:22それで、イエスが死人の中からよみがえったとき、弟子たちはイエスがこう言われたことを思い出して、聖書とイエスのこの言葉とを信じた。 | 2:22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he said this, and they believed the Scripture, and the word which Jesus had said. | |

| 3:4ニコデモは言った、「人は年をとってから生れることが、どうしてできますか。もう一度、母の胎にはいって生れることができましょうか」。 | 3:4 Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb, and be born?" | |
| 3:5イエスは答えられた、「よくよくあなたに言っておく。だれでも、水と霊とから生れなければ、神の国にはいることはできない。 | 3:5 Jesus answered, "Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born of water and spirit, he can't enter into the Kingdom of God! | |
| 3:6肉から生れる者は肉であり、霊から生れる者は霊である。 | 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit. | |
| 3:7あなたがたは新しく生れなければならないと、わたしが言ったからとて、不思議に思うには及ばない。 | 3:7 Don't marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born anew.' | |
| 3:8風は思いのままに吹く。あなたはその音を聞くが、それがどこからきて、どこへ行くかは知らない。霊から生れる者もみな、それと同じである」。 | 3:8 The wind {The same Greek word (pneuma) means wind, breath, and spirit.} blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but don't know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit." | |

| 3:11よくよく言っておく。わたしたちは自分の知っていることを語り、また自分の見たことをあかししているのに、あなたがたはわたしたちのあかしを受けいれない。 | 3:11 Most certainly I tell you, we speak that which we know, and testify of that which we have seen, and you don't receive our witness. | |
| 3:12わたしが地上のことを語っているのに、あなたがたが信じないならば、天上のことを語った場合、どうしてそれを信じるだろうか。 | 3:12 If I told you earthly things and you don't believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? | |
| 3:13天から下ってきた者、すなわち人の子のほかには、だれも天に上った者はない。 | 3:13 No one has ascended into heaven, but he who descended out of heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven. | |
| 3:14そして、ちょうどモーセが荒野でへびを上げたように、人の子もまた上げられなければならない。 | 3:14 As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, | |
| 3:15それは彼を信じる者が、すべて永遠の命を得るためである」。 | 3:15 that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. | |
| 3:16神はそのひとり子を賜わったほどに、この世を愛して下さった。それは御子を信じる者がひとりも滅びないで、永遠の命を得るためである。 | 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. | |
| 3:17神が御子を世につかわされたのは、世をさばくためではなく、御子によって、この世が救われるためである。 | 3:17 For God didn't send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him. | |
| 3:18彼を信じる者は、さばかれない。信じない者は、すでにさばかれている。神のひとり子の名を信じることをしないからである。 | 3:18 He who believes in him is not judged. He who doesn't believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God. | |
| 3:19そのさばきというのは、光がこの世にきたのに、人々はそのおこないが悪いために、光よりもやみの方を愛したことである。 | 3:19 This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil. | |
| 3:20悪を行っている者はみな光を憎む。そして、そのおこないが明るみに出されるのを恐れて、光にこようとはしない。 | 3:20 For everyone who does evil hates the light, and doesn't come to the light, lest his works would be exposed. | |
| 3:21しかし、真理を行っている者は光に来る。その人のおこないの、神にあってなされたということが、明らかにされるためである。 | 3:21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his works may be revealed, that they have been done in God." | |
| 3:22こののち、イエスは弟子たちとユダヤの地に行き、彼らと一緒にそこに滞在して、バプテスマを授けておられた。 | 3:22 After these things, Jesus came with his disciples into the land of Judea. He stayed there with them, and baptized. | |
| 3:23ヨハネもサリムに近いアイノンで、バプテスマを授けていた。そこには水がたくさんあったからである。人々がぞくぞくとやってきてバプテスマを受けていた。 | 3:23 John also was baptizing in Enon near Salim, because there was much water there. They came, and were baptized. | |

| 3:25ところが、ヨハネの弟子たちとひとりのユダヤ人との間に、きよめのことで争論が起った。 | 3:25 There arose therefore a questioning on the part of John's disciples with some Jews about purification. | |

| 4:31その間に弟子たちはイエスに、「先生、召しあがってください」とすすめた。 | 4:31 In the meanwhile, the disciples urged him, saying, "Rabbi, eat." | |

| 4:34イエスは彼らに言われた、「わたしの食物というのは、わたしをつかわされたかたのみこころを行い、そのみわざをなし遂げることである。 | 4:34 Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to accomplish his work. | |
| 4:35あなたがたは、刈入れ時が来るまでには、まだ四か月あると、言っているではないか。しかし、わたしはあなたがたに言う。目をあげて畑を見なさい。はや色づいて刈入れを待っている。 | 4:35 Don't you say, 'There are yet four months until the harvest?' Behold, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and look at the fields, that they are white for harvest already. | |
| 4:36刈る者は報酬を受けて、永遠の命に至る実を集めている。まく者も刈る者も、共々に喜ぶためである。 | 4:36 He who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit to eternal life; that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. | |
| 4:37そこで、『ひとりがまき、ひとりが刈る』ということわざが、ほんとうのこととなる。 | 4:37 For in this the saying is true, 'One sows, and another reaps.' | |

| 4:43ふつかの後に、イエスはここを去ってガリラヤへ行かれた。 | 4:43 After the two days he went out from there and went into Galilee. | |
| 4:44イエスはみずからはっきり、「預言者は自分の故郷では敬われないものだ」と言われたのである。 | 4:44 For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country. | |
| 4:45ガリラヤに着かれると、ガリラヤの人たちはイエスを歓迎した。それは、彼らも祭に行っていたので、その祭の時、イエスがエルサレムでなされたことをことごとく見ていたからである。 | 4:45 So when he came into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things that he did in Jerusalem at the feast, for they also went to the feast. | |

| 4:47この人が、ユダヤからガリラヤにイエスのきておられることを聞き、みもとにきて、カペナウムに下って、彼の子をなおしていただきたいと、願った。その子が死にかかっていたからである。 | 4:47 When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to him, and begged him that he would come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. | |

| 5:3その廊の中には、病人、盲人、足なえ、やせ衰えた者などが、大ぜいからだを横たえていた。〔彼らは水の動くのを待っていたのである。 | 5:3 In these lay a great multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, or paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water; | |
| 5:4それは、時々、主の御使がこの池に降りてきて水を動かすことがあるが、水が動いた時まっ先にはいる者は、どんな病気にかかっていても、いやされたからである。〕 | 5:4 for an angel went down at certain times into the pool, and stirred up the water. Whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was made whole of whatever disease he had. | |
| 5:5さて、そこに三十八年のあいだ、病気に悩んでいる人があった。 | 5:5 A certain man was there, who had been sick for thirty-eight years. | |
| 5:6イエスはその人が横になっているのを見、また長い間わずらっていたのを知って、その人に「なおりたいのか」と言われた。 | 5:6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had been sick for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to be made well?" | |
| 5:7この病人はイエスに答えた、「主よ、水が動く時に、わたしを池の中に入れてくれる人がいません。わたしがはいりかけると、ほかの人が先に降りて行くのです」。 | 5:7 The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I'm coming, another steps down before me." | |
| 5:8イエスは彼に言われた、「起きて、あなたの床を取りあげ、そして歩きなさい」。 | 5:8 Jesus said to him, "Arise, take up your mat, and walk." | |
| 5:9すると、この人はすぐにいやされ、床をとりあげて歩いて行った。その日は安息日であった。 | 5:9 Immediately, the man was made well, and took up his mat and walked. Now it was the Sabbath on that day. | |
| 5:10そこでユダヤ人たちは、そのいやされた人に言った、「きょうは安息日だ。床を取りあげるのは、よろしくない」。 | 5:10 So the Jews said to him who was cured, "It is the Sabbath. It is not lawful for you to carry the mat." | |

| 5:12彼らは尋ねた、「取りあげて歩けと言った人は、だれか」。 | 5:12 Then they asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Take up your mat, and walk'?" | |
| 5:13しかし、このいやされた人は、それがだれであるか知らなかった。群衆がその場にいたので、イエスはそっと出て行かれたからである。 | 5:13 But he who was healed didn't know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a crowd being in the place. | |
| 5:14そののち、イエスは宮でその人に出会ったので、彼に言われた、「ごらん、あなたはよくなった。もう罪を犯してはいけない。何かもっと悪いことが、あなたの身に起るかも知れないから」。 | 5:14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, "Behold, you are made well. Sin no more, so that nothing worse happens to you." | |
| 5:15彼は出て行って、自分をいやしたのはイエスであったと、ユダヤ人たちに告げた。 | 5:15 The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. | |
| 5:16そのためユダヤ人たちは、安息日にこのようなことをしたと言って、イエスを責めた。 | 5:16 For this cause the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill him, because he did these things on the Sabbath. | |
| 5:17そこで、イエスは彼らに答えられた、「わたしの父は今に至るまで働いておられる。わたしも働くのである」。 | 5:17 But Jesus answered them, "My Father is still working, so I am working, too." | |
| 5:18このためにユダヤ人たちは、ますますイエスを殺そうと計るようになった。それは、イエスが安息日を破られたばかりではなく、神を自分の父と呼んで、自分を神と等しいものとされたからである。 | 5:18 For this cause therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the Sabbath, but also called God his own Father, making himself equal with God. | |
| 5:19さて、イエスは彼らに答えて言われた、「よくよくあなたがたに言っておく。子は父のなさることを見てする以外に、自分からは何事もすることができない。父のなさることであればすべて、子もそのとおりにするのである。 | 5:19 Jesus therefore answered them, "Most certainly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but what he sees the Father doing. For whatever things he does, these the Son also does likewise. | |
| 5:20なぜなら、父は子を愛して、みずからなさることは、すべて子にお示しになるからである。そして、それよりもなお大きなわざを、お示しになるであろう。あなたがたが、それによって不思議に思うためである。 | 5:20 For the Father has affection for the Son, and shows him all things that he himself does. He will show him greater works than these, that you may marvel. | |
| 5:21すなわち、父が死人を起して命をお与えになるように、子もまた、そのこころにかなう人々に命を与えるであろう。 | 5:21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom he desires. | |
| 5:22父はだれをもさばかない。さばきのことはすべて、子にゆだねられたからである。 | 5:22 For the Father judges no one, but he has given all judgment to the Son, | |
| 5:23それは、すべての人が父を敬うと同様に、子を敬うためである。子を敬わない者は、子をつかわされた父をも敬わない。 | 5:23 that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who doesn't honor the Son doesn't honor the Father who sent him. | |
| 5:24よくよくあなたがたに言っておく。わたしの言葉を聞いて、わたしをつかわされたかたを信じる者は、永遠の命を受け、またさばかれることがなく、死から命に移っているのである。 | 5:24 "Most certainly I tell you, he who hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has eternal life, and doesn't come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. | |
| 5:25よくよくあなたがたに言っておく。死んだ人たちが、神の子の声を聞く時が来る。今すでにきている。そして聞く人は生きるであろう。 | 5:25 Most certainly, I tell you, the hour comes, and now is, when the dead will hear the Son of God's voice; and those who hear will live. | |
| 5:26それは、父がご自分のうちに生命をお持ちになっていると同様に、子にもまた、自分のうちに生命を持つことをお許しになったからである。 | 5:26 For as the Father has life in himself, even so he gave to the Son also to have life in himself. | |
| 5:27そして子は人の子であるから、子にさばきを行う権威をお与えになった。 | 5:27 He also gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man. | |
| 5:28このことを驚くには及ばない。墓の中にいる者たちがみな神の子の声を聞き、 | 5:28 Don't marvel at this, for the hour comes, in which all that are in the tombs will hear his voice, | |
| 5:29善をおこなった人々は、生命を受けるためによみがえり、悪をおこなった人々は、さばきを受けるためによみがえって、それぞれ出てくる時が来るであろう。 | 5:29 and will come out; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life; and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment. | |
| 5:30わたしは、自分からは何事もすることができない。ただ聞くままにさばくのである。そして、わたしのこのさばきは正しい。それは、わたし自身の考えでするのではなく、わたしをつかわされたかたの、み旨を求めているからである。 | 5:30 I can of myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is righteous; because I don't seek my own will, but the will of my Father who sent me. | |

| 5:34わたしは人からあかしを受けないが、このことを言うのは、あなたがたが救われるためである。 | 5:34 But the testimony which I receive is not from man. However, I say these things that you may be saved. | |
| 5:35ヨハネは燃えて輝くあかりであった。あなたがたは、しばらくの間その光を喜び楽しもうとした。 | 5:35 He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. | |

| 5:45わたしがあなたがたのことを父に訴えると、考えてはいけない。あなたがたを訴える者は、あなたがたが頼みとしているモーセその人である。 | 5:45 "Don't think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you, even Moses, on whom you have set your hope. | |

| 6:10イエスは「人々をすわらせなさい」と言われた。その場所には草が多かった。そこにすわった男の数は五千人ほどであった。 | 6:10 Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." Now there was much grass in that place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. | |

| 6:17舟に乗って海を渡り、向こう岸のカペナウムに行きかけた。すでに暗くなっていたのに、イエスはまだ彼らのところにおいでにならなかった。 | 6:17 and they entered into the boat, and were going over the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not come to them. | |
| 6:18その上、強い風が吹いてきて、海は荒れ出した。 | 6:18 The sea was tossed by a great wind blowing. | |
| 6:19四、五十丁こぎ出したとき、イエスが海の上を歩いて舟に近づいてこられるのを見て、彼らは恐れた。 | 6:19 When therefore they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia, {25 to 30 stadia is about 5 to 6 kilometers or about 3 to 4 miles} they saw Jesus walking on the sea, {see Job 9:8} and drawing near to the boat; and they were afraid. | |

| 6:23しかし、数そうの小舟がテベリヤからきて、主が感謝されたのちパンを人々に食べさせた場所に近づいた。 | 6:23 However boats from Tiberias came near to the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks. | |

| 6:27朽ちる食物のためではなく、永遠の命に至る朽ちない食物のために働くがよい。これは人の子があなたがたに与えるものである。父なる神は、人の子にそれをゆだねられたのである」。 | 6:27 Don't work for the food which perishes, but for the food which remains to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For God the Father has sealed him." | |

| 6:45預言者の書に、『彼らはみな神に教えられるであろう』と書いてある。父から聞いて学んだ者は、みなわたしに来るのである。 | 6:45 It is written in the prophets, 'They will all be taught by God.' {Isaiah 54:13} Therefore everyone who hears from the Father, and has learned, comes to me. | |
| 6:46神から出た者のほかに、だれかが父を見たのではない。その者だけが父を見たのである。 | 6:46 Not that anyone has seen the Father, except he who is from God. He has seen the Father. | |
| 6:47よくよくあなたがたに言っておく。信じる者には永遠の命がある。 | 6:47 Most certainly, I tell you, he who believes in me has eternal life. | |
| 6:48わたしは命のパンである。 | 6:48 I am the bread of life. | |
| 6:49あなたがたの先祖は荒野でマナを食べたが、死んでしまった。 | 6:49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. | |
| 6:50しかし、天から下ってきたパンを食べる人は、決して死ぬことはない。 | 6:50 This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, that anyone may eat of it and not die. | |

| 6:57生ける父がわたしをつかわされ、また、わたしが父によって生きているように、わたしを食べる者もわたしによって生きるであろう。 | 6:57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father; so he who feeds on me, he will also live because of me. | |
| 6:58天から下ってきたパンは、先祖たちが食べたが死んでしまったようなものではない。このパンを食べる者は、いつまでも生きるであろう」。 | 6:58 This is the bread which came down out of heaven--not as our fathers ate the manna, and died. He who eats this bread will live forever." | |

| 6:61しかしイエスは、弟子たちがそのことでつぶやいているのを見破って、彼らに言われた、「このことがあなたがたのつまずきになるのか。 | 6:61 But Jesus knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at this, said to them, "Does this cause you to stumble? | |
| 6:62それでは、もし人の子が前にいた所に上るのを見たら、どうなるのか。 | 6:62 Then what if you would see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? | |
| 6:63人を生かすものは霊であって、肉はなんの役にも立たない。わたしがあなたがたに話した言葉は霊であり、また命である。 | 6:63 It is the spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life. | |
| 6:64しかし、あなたがたの中には信じない者がいる」。イエスは、初めから、だれが信じないか、また、だれが彼を裏切るかを知っておられたのである。 | 6:64 But there are some of you who don't believe." For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who didn't believe, and who it was who would betray him. | |

| 7:5こう言ったのは、兄弟たちもイエスを信じていなかったからである。 | 7:5 For even his brothers didn't believe in him. | |

| 7:12群衆の中に、イエスについていろいろとうわさが立った。ある人々は、「あれはよい人だ」と言い、他の人々は、「いや、あれは群衆を惑わしている」と言った。 | 7:12 There was much murmuring among the multitudes concerning him. Some said, "He is a good man." Others said, "Not so, but he leads the multitude astray." | |

| 7:17神のみこころを行おうと思う者であれば、だれでも、わたしの語っているこの教が神からのものか、それとも、わたし自身から出たものか、わかるであろう。 | 7:17 If anyone desires to do his will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is from God, or if I am speaking from myself. | |
| 7:18自分から出たことを語る者は、自分の栄光を求めるが、自分をつかわされたかたの栄光を求める者は真実であって、その人の内には偽りがない。 | 7:18 He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory, but he who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and no unrighteousness is in him. | |

| 8:47神からきた者は神の言葉に聞き従うが、あなたがたが聞き従わないのは、神からきた者でないからである」。 | 8:47 He who is of God hears the words of God. For this cause you don't hear, because you are not of God." | |

| 9:30そこで彼が答えて言った、「わたしの目をあけて下さったのに、そのかたがどこからきたか、ご存じないとは、不思議千万です。 | 9:30 The man answered them, "How amazing! You don't know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. | |
| 9:31わたしたちはこのことを知っています。神は罪人の言うことはお聞きいれになりませんが、神を敬い、そのみこころを行う人の言うことは、聞きいれて下さいます。 | 9:31 We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshipper of God, and does his will, he listens to him. {Psalm 66:18, Proverbs 15:29; 28:9} | |
| 9:32生れつき盲であった者の目をあけた人があるということは、世界が始まって以来、聞いたことがありません。 | 9:32 Since the world began it has never been heard of that anyone opened the eyes of someone born blind. | |
| 9:33もしあのかたが神からきた人でなかったら、何一つできなかったはずです」。 | 9:33 If this man were not from God, he could do nothing." | |
| 9:34これを聞いて彼らは言った、「おまえは全く罪の中に生れていながら、わたしたちを教えようとするのか」。そして彼を外へ追い出した。 | 9:34 They answered him, "You were altogether born in sins, and do you teach us?" They threw him out. | |

| 10:10盗人が来るのは、盗んだり、殺したり、滅ぼしたりするためにほかならない。わたしがきたのは、羊に命を得させ、豊かに得させるためである。 | 10:10 The thief only comes to steal, kill, and destroy. I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly. | |

| 11:9イエスは答えられた、「一日には十二時間あるではないか。昼間あるけば、人はつまずくことはない。この世の光を見ているからである。 | 11:9 Jesus answered, "Aren't there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn't stumble, because he sees the light of this world. | |
| 11:10しかし、夜あるけば、つまずく。その人のうちに、光がないからである」。 | 11:10 But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn't in him." | |
| 11:11そう言われたが、それからまた、彼らに言われた、「わたしたちの友ラザロが眠っている。わたしは彼を起しに行く」。 | 11:11 He said these things, and after that, he said to them, "Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep." | |

| 11:19大ぜいのユダヤ人が、その兄弟のことで、マルタとマリヤとを慰めようとしてきていた。 | 11:19 Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother. | |
| 11:20マルタはイエスがこられたと聞いて、出迎えに行ったが、マリヤは家ですわっていた。 | 11:20 Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house. | |
| 11:21マルタはイエスに言った、「主よ、もしあなたがここにいて下さったなら、わたしの兄弟は死ななかったでしょう。 | 11:21 Therefore Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn't have died. | |
| 11:22しかし、あなたがどんなことをお願いになっても、神はかなえて下さることを、わたしは今でも存じています」。 | 11:22 Even now I know that, whatever you ask of God, God will give you." | |

| 21:18よくよくあなたに言っておく。あなたが若かった時には、自分で帯をしめて、思いのままに歩きまわっていた。しかし年をとってからは、自分の手をのばすことになろう。そして、ほかの人があなたに帯を結びつけ、行きたくない所へ連れて行くであろう」。 | 21:18 Most certainly I tell you, when you were young, you dressed yourself, and walked where you wanted to. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you, and carry you where you don't want to go." | |
| 21:19これは、ペテロがどんな死に方で、神の栄光をあらわすかを示すために、お話しになったのである。こう話してから、「わたしに従ってきなさい」と言われた。 | 21:19 Now he said this, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. When he had said this, he said to him, "Follow me." | |
| 21:20ペテロはふり返ると、イエスの愛しておられた弟子がついて来るのを見た。この弟子は、あの夕食のときイエスの胸近くに寄りかかって、「主よ、あなたを裏切る者は、だれなのですか」と尋ねた人である。 | 21:20 Then Peter, turning around, saw a disciple following. This was the disciple whom Jesus sincerely loved, the one who had also leaned on Jesus' breast at the supper and asked, "Lord, who is going to betray You?" | |

| 21:22イエスは彼に言われた、「たとい、わたしの来る時まで彼が生き残っていることを、わたしが望んだとしても、あなたにはなんの係わりがあるか。あなたは、わたしに従ってきなさい」。 | 21:22 Jesus said to him, "If I desire that he stay until I come, what is that to you? You follow me." | |
| 21:23こういうわけで、この弟子は死ぬことがないといううわさが、兄弟たちの間にひろまった。しかし、イエスは彼が死ぬことはないと言われたのではなく、ただ「たとい、わたしの来る時まで彼が生き残っていることを、わたしが望んだとしても、あなたにはなんの係わりがあるか」と言われただけである。 | 21:23 This saying therefore went out among the brothers {The word for "brothers" here may be also correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings."}, that this disciple wouldn't die. Yet Jesus didn't say to him that he wouldn't die, but, "If I desire that he stay until I come, what is that to you?" | |
| 21:24これらの事についてあかしをし、またこれらの事を書いたのは、この弟子である。そして彼のあかしが真実であることを、わたしたちは知っている。 | 21:24 This is the disciple who testifies about these things, and wrote these things. We know that his witness is true. | |
| 21:25イエスのなさったことは、このほかにまだ数多くある。もしいちいち書きつけるならば、世界もその書かれた文書を収めきれないであろうと思う。 | 21:25 There are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they would all be written, I suppose that even the world itself wouldn't have room for the books that would be written. |
