1:1主の言葉がアミッタイの子ヨナに臨んで言った、		1:1 Now the word of Yahweh {"Yahweh" is God's proper Name, sometimes rendered "LORD" (all caps) in other translations.} came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
1:2「立って、あの大きな町ニネベに行き、これに向かって呼ばわれ。彼らの悪がわたしの前に上ってきたからである」。		1:2 "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it, for their wickedness has come up before me."
1:3しかしヨナは主の前を離れてタルシシへのがれようと、立ってヨッパに下って行った。ところがちょうど、タルシシへ行く船があったので、船賃を払い、主の前を離れて、人々と共にタルシシへ行こうと船に乗った。		1:3 But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid its fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh.
1:4時に、主は大風を海の上に起されたので、船が破れるほどの激しい暴風が海の上にあった。		1:4 But Yahweh sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty storm on the sea, so that the ship was likely to break up.
1:5それで水夫たちは恐れて、めいめい自分の神を呼び求め、また船を軽くするため、その中の積み荷を海に投げ捨てた。しかし、ヨナは船の奥に下り、伏して熟睡していた。		1:5 Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship, and he was laying down, and was fast asleep.
1:6そこで船長は来て、彼に言った、「あなたはどうして眠っているのか。起きて、あなたの神に呼ばわりなさい。神があるいは、われわれを顧みて、助けてくださるだろう」。		1:6 So the shipmaster came to him, and said to him, "What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God {or, gods}! Maybe your God {or, gods} will notice us, so that we won't perish."
1:7やがて人々は互に言った、「この災がわれわれに臨んだのは、だれのせいか知るために、さあ、くじを引いてみよう」。そして彼らが、くじを引いたところ、くじはヨナに当った。		1:7 They all said to each other, "Come, let us cast lots, that we may know who is responsible for this evil that is on us." So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.
1:8そこで人々はヨナに言った、「この災がだれのせいで、われわれに臨んだのか、われわれに告げなさい。あなたの職業は何か。あなたはどこから来たのか。あなたの国はどこか。あなたはどこの民か」。		1:8 Then they asked him, "Tell us, please, for whose cause this evil is on us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? Of what people are you?"
1:9ヨナは彼らに言った、「わたしはヘブルびとです。わたしは海と陸とをお造りになった天の神、主を恐れる者です」。		1:9 He said to them, "I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God {The Hebrew word rendered "God" is "Elohim."} of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land."
1:10そこで人々ははなはだしく恐れて、彼に言った、「あなたはなんたる事をしてくれたのか」。人々は彼がさきに彼らに告げた事によって、彼が主の前を離れて、のがれようとしていた事を知っていたからである。		1:10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said to him, "What is this that you have done?" For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Yahweh, because he had told them.
1:11人々は彼に言った、「われわれのために海が静まるには、あなたをどうしたらよかろうか」。それは海がますます荒れてきたからである。		1:11 Then they said to him, "What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?" For the sea grew more and more stormy.
1:12ヨナは彼らに言った、「わたしを取って海に投げ入れなさい。そうしたら海は、あなたがたのために静まるでしょう。わたしにはよくわかっています。この激しい暴風があなたがたに臨んだのは、わたしのせいです」。		1:12 He said to them, "Take me up, and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will be calm for you; for I know that because of me this great storm is on you."
1:13しかし人々は船を陸にこぎもどそうとつとめたが、成功しなかった。それは海が彼らに逆らって、いよいよ荒れたからである。		1:13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them.
1:14そこで人々は主に呼ばわって言った、「主よ、どうぞ、この人の生命のために、われわれを滅ぼさないでください。また罪なき血を、われわれに帰しないでください。主よ、これはみ心に従って、なされた事だからです」。		1:14 Therefore they cried to Yahweh, and said, "We beg you, Yahweh, we beg you, don't let us die for this man's life, and don't lay on us innocent blood; for you, Yahweh, have done as it pleased you."
1:15そして彼らはヨナを取って海に投げ入れた。すると海の荒れるのがやんだ。		1:15 So they took up Jonah, and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased its raging.
1:16そこで人々は大いに主を恐れ、犠牲を主にささげて、誓願を立てた。		1:16 Then the men feared Yahweh exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh, and made vows.
1:17主は大いなる魚を備えて、ヨナをのませられた。ヨナは三日三夜その魚の腹の中にいた。		1:17 Yahweh prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
2:1ヨナは魚の腹の中からその神、主に祈って、		2:1 Then Jonah prayed to Yahweh, his God, out of the fish's belly.
2:2言った、「わたしは悩みのうちから主に呼ばわると、主はわたしに答えられた。わたしが陰府の腹の中から叫ぶと、あなたはわたしの声を聞かれた。		2:2 He said, "I called because of my affliction to Yahweh. He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol {Sheol is the place of the dead.} I cried. You heard my voice.
2:3あなたはわたしを淵の中、海のまん中に投げ入れられた。大水はわたしをめぐり、あなたの波と大波は皆、わたしの上を越えて行った。		2:3 For you threw me into the depths, in the heart of the seas. The flood was all around me. All your waves and your billows passed over me.
2:4わたしは言った、『わたしはあなたの前から追われてしまった、どうして再びあなたの聖なる宮を望みえようか』。		2:4 I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.'
2:5水がわたしをめぐって魂にまでおよび、淵はわたしを取り囲み、海草は山の根元でわたしの頭にまといついた。		2:5 The waters surrounded me, even to the soul. The deep was around me. The weeds were wrapped around my head.
2:6わたしは地に下り、地の貫の木はいつもわたしの上にあった。しかしわが神、主よ、あなたはわが命を穴から救いあげられた。		2:6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains. The earth barred me in forever: yet have you brought up my life from the pit, Yahweh my God.
2:7わが魂がわたしのうちに弱っているとき、わたしは主をおぼえ、わたしの祈はあなたに至り、あなたの聖なる宮に達した。		2:7 "When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Yahweh. My prayer came in to you, into your holy temple.
2:8むなしい偶像に心を寄せる者は、そのまことの忠節を捨てる。		2:8 Those who regard lying vanities forsake their own mercy.
2:9しかしわたしは感謝の声をもって、あなたに犠牲をささげ、わたしの誓いをはたす。救は主にある」。		2:9 But I will sacrifice to you with the voice of thanksgiving. I will pay that which I have vowed. Salvation belongs to Yahweh."
2:10主は魚にお命じになったので、魚はヨナを陸に吐き出した。		2:10 Yahweh spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah on the dry land.
3:1時に主の言葉は再びヨナに臨んで言った、		3:1 The word of Yahweh came to Jonah the second time, saying,
3:2「立って、あの大きな町ニネベに行き、あなたに命じる言葉をこれに伝えよ」。		3:2 "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I give you."
3:3そこでヨナは主の言葉に従い、立って、ニネベに行った。ニネベは非常に大きな町であって、これを行きめぐるには、三日を要するほどであった。		3:3 So Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh, according to the word of Yahweh. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days' journey across.
3:4ヨナはその町にはいり、初め一日路を行きめぐって呼ばわり、「四十日を経たらニネベは滅びる」と言った。		3:4 Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried out, and said, "In forty days, Nineveh will be overthrown!"
3:5そこでニネベの人々は神を信じ、断食をふれ、大きい者から小さい者まで荒布を着た。		3:5 The people of Nineveh believed God; and they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from their greatest even to their least.
3:6このうわさがニネベの王に達すると、彼はその王座から立ち上がり、朝服を脱ぎ、荒布をまとい、灰の中に座した。		3:6 The news reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and took off his royal robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
3:7また王とその大臣の布告をもって、ニネベ中にふれさせて言った、「人も獣も牛も羊もみな、何をも味わってはならない。物を食い、水を飲んではならない。		3:7 He made a proclamation and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, "Let neither man nor animal, herd nor flock, taste anything; let them not feed, nor drink water;
3:8人も獣も荒布をまとい、ひたすら神に呼ばわり、おのおのその悪い道およびその手にある強暴を離れよ。		3:8 but let them be covered with sackcloth, both man and animal, and let them cry mightily to God. Yes, let them turn everyone from his evil way, and from the violence that is in his hands.
3:9あるいは神はみ心をかえ、その激しい怒りをやめて、われわれを滅ぼされないかもしれない。だれがそれを知るだろう」。		3:9 Who knows whether God will not turn and relent, and turn away from his fierce anger, so that we might not perish?"
3:10神は彼らのなすところ、その悪い道を離れたのを見られ、彼らの上に下そうと言われた災を思いかえして、これをおやめになった。		3:10 God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way. God relented of the disaster which he said he would do to them, and he didn't do it.
4:1ところがヨナはこれを非常に不快として、激しく怒り、		4:1 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry.
4:2主に祈って言った、「主よ、わたしがなお国におりました時、この事を申したではありませんか。それでこそわたしは、急いでタルシシにのがれようとしたのです。なぜなら、わたしはあなたが恵み深い神、あわれみあり、怒ることおそく、いつくしみ豊かで、災を思いかえされることを、知っていたからです。		4:2 He prayed to Yahweh, and said, "Please, Yahweh, wasn't this what I said when I was still in my own country? Therefore I hurried to flee to Tarshish, for I knew that you are a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and you relent of doing harm.
4:3それで主よ、どうぞ今わたしの命をとってください。わたしにとっては、生きるよりも死ぬ方がましだからです」。		4:3 Therefore now, Yahweh, take, I beg you, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live."
4:4主は言われた、「あなたの怒るのは、よいことであろうか」。		4:4 Yahweh said, "Is it right for you to be angry?"
4:5そこでヨナは町から出て、町の東の方に座し、そこに自分のために一つの小屋を造り、町のなりゆきを見きわめようと、その下の日陰にすわっていた。		4:5 Then Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made himself a booth, and sat under it in the shade, until he might see what would become of the city.
4:6時に主なる神は、ヨナを暑さの苦痛から救うために、とうごまを備えて、それを育て、ヨナの頭の上に日陰を設けた。ヨナはこのとうごまを非常に喜んだ。		4:6 Yahweh God prepared a vine, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to deliver him from his discomfort. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the vine.
4:7ところが神は翌日の夜明けに虫を備えて、そのとうごまをかませられたので、それは枯れた。		4:7 But God prepared a worm at dawn the next day, and it chewed on the vine, so that it withered.
4:8やがて太陽が出たとき、神が暑い東風を備え、また太陽がヨナの頭を照したので、ヨナは弱りはて、死ぬことを願って言った、「生きるよりも死ぬ方がわたしにはましだ」。		4:8 It happened, when the sun arose, that God prepared a sultry east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah's head, so that he fainted, and requested for himself that he might die, and said, "It is better for me to die than to live."
4:9しかし神はヨナに言われた、「とうごまのためにあなたの怒るのはよくない」。ヨナは言った、「わたしは怒りのあまり狂い死にそうです」。		4:9 God said to Jonah, "Is it right for you to be angry about the vine?" He said, "I am right to be angry, even to death."
4:10主は言われた、「あなたは労せず、育てず、一夜に生じて、一夜に滅びたこのとうごまをさえ、惜しんでいる。		4:10 Yahweh said, "You have been concerned for the vine, for which you have not labored, neither made it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night.
4:11ましてわたしは十二万あまりの、右左をわきまえない人々と、あまたの家畜とのいるこの大きな町ニネベを、惜しまないでいられようか」。		4:11 Shouldn't I be concerned for Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred twenty thousand persons who can't discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much livestock?"
