1:6主はこう言われる、「ガザの三つのとが、四つのとがのために、わたしはこれを罰してゆるさない。これは彼らが人々をことごとく捕えて行って、エドムに渡したからである。		1:6 Thus says Yahweh: "For three transgressions of Gaza, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they carried away captive the whole community, to deliver them up to Edom;
1:7わたしはガザの石がきに火を送り、そのもろもろの宮殿を焼き滅ぼす。		1:7 but I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza, and it will devour its palaces.
1:8わたしはアシドドから住民を断ち、アシケロンから王のつえをとる者を断つ。わたしはまた手をかえしてエクロンを撃つ。そして残ったペリシテびとも滅びる」と主なる神は言われる。		1:8 I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and him who holds the scepter from Ashkelon; and I will turn my hand against Ekron; and the remnant of the Philistines will perish," says the Lord {The word translated "Lord" is "Adonai."} Yahweh.
1:9主はこう言われる、「ツロの三つのとが、四つのとがのために、わたしはこれを罰してゆるさない。これは彼らが人々をことごとくエドムに渡し、また兄弟の契約を心に留めなかったからである。		1:9 Thus says Yahweh: "For three transgressions of Tyre, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they delivered up the whole community to Edom, and didn't remember the brotherly covenant;

2:11わたしはあなたがたの子らのうちから預言者を起し、あなたがたの若者のうちからナジルびとを起した。イスラエルの人々よ、そうではないか」と主は言われる。		2:11 I raised up some of your sons for prophets, and some of your young men for Nazirites. Isn't this true, you children of Israel?" says Yahweh.
2:12「ところがあなたがたはナジルびとに酒を飲ませ、預言者に命じて『預言するな』と言う。		2:12 "But you gave the Nazirites wine to drink, and commanded the prophets, saying, 'Don't prophesy!'
2:13見よ、わたしは麦束をいっぱい積んだ車が物を圧するように、あなたがたをその所で圧する。		2:13 Behold, I will crush you in your place, as a cart crushes that is full of grain.
2:14速く走る者も逃げ場を失い、強い者もその力をふるうことができず、勇士もその命を救うことができない。		2:14 Flight will perish from the swift; and the strong won't strengthen his force; neither shall the mighty deliver himself;
2:15弓をとる者も立つことができず、足早の者も自分を救うことができず、馬に乗る者もその命を救うことができない。		2:15 neither shall he stand who handles the bow; and he who is swift of foot won't escape; neither shall he who rides the horse deliver himself;
2:16勇士のうちの雄々しい心の者もその日には裸で逃げる」と主は言われる。		2:16 and he who is courageous among the mighty will flee away naked on that day," says Yahweh.
3:1イスラエルの人々よ、主があなたがたに向かって言われたこと、わたしがエジプトの地から導き上った全家に向かって言ったこの言葉を聞け。		3:1 Hear this word that Yahweh has spoken against you, children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up out of the land of Egypt, saying:
3:2「地のもろもろのやからのうちで、わたしはただ、あなたがただけを知った。それゆえ、わたしはあなたがたのもろもろの罪のため、あなたがたを罰する。		3:2 "You only have I chosen of all the families of the earth. Therefore I will punish you for all of your sins."
3:3ふたりの者がもし約束しなかったなら、一緒に歩くだろうか。		3:3 Do two walk together, unless they have agreed?
3:4ししがもし獲物がなかったなら、林の中でほえるだろうか。若いししがもし物をつかまなかったなら、その穴から声を出すだろうか。		3:4 Will a lion roar in the thicket, when he has no prey? Does a young lion cry out of his den, if he has caught nothing?
3:5もしわながなかったなら、鳥は地に張った網にかかるだろうか。網にもし何もかからなかったなら、地からとびあがるだろうか。		3:5 Can a bird fall in a trap on the earth, where no snare is set for him? Does a snare spring up from the ground, when there is nothing to catch?
3:6町でラッパが鳴ったなら、民は驚かないだろうか。主がなされるのでなければ、町に災が起るだろうか。		3:6 Does the trumpet alarm sound in a city, without the people being afraid? Does evil happen to a city, and Yahweh hasn't done it?
3:7まことに主なる神はそのしもべである預言者にその隠れた事を示さないでは、何事をもなされない。		3:7 Surely the Lord Yahweh will do nothing, unless he reveals his secret to his servants the prophets.
3:8ししがほえる、だれが恐れないでいられよう。主なる神が語られる、だれが預言しないでいられよう」。		3:8 The lion has roared. Who will not fear? The Lord Yahweh has spoken. Who can but prophesy?
3:9アッスリヤにあるもろもろの宮殿、エジプトの地にあるもろもろの宮殿に宣べて言え、「サマリヤの山々に集まり、そのうちにある大いなる騒ぎと、その中で行われる暴虐とを見よ」と。		3:9 Proclaim in the palaces at Ashdod, and in the palaces in the land of Egypt, and say, "Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria, and see what unrest is in her, and what oppression is among them."

5:9主は滅びをたちまち強い者に臨ませられるので、滅びはついに城に臨む。		5:9 who brings sudden destruction on the strong, so that destruction comes on the fortress.

You have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine.

5:13それゆえ、このような時には賢い者は沈黙する、これは悪い時だからである。		5:13 Therefore a prudent person keeps silent in such a time, for it is an evil time.

5:26かえってあなたがたの王シクテをにない、あなたがたが自分で作ったあなたがたの偶像、星の神、キウンをになった。		5:26 You also carried the tent of your king and the shrine of your images, the star of your god, which you made for yourselves.
5:27それゆえわたしはあなたがたをダマスコのかなたに捕え移す」と、その名を万軍の神ととなえられる主は言われる。		5:27 Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus," says Yahweh, whose name is the God of Armies.
6:1「わざわいなるかな、安らかにシオンにいる者、また安心してサマリヤの山にいる者、諸国民のかしらのうちの著名な人々で、イスラエルの家がきて従う者よ。		6:1 Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, and to those who are secure on the mountain of Samaria, the notable men of the chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel come!
6:2カルネに渡って見よ。そこから大ハマテに行き、またペリシテびとのガテに下って見よ。彼らはこれらの国にまさっているか。彼らの土地はあなたがたの土地よりも大きいか。		6:2 Go to Calneh, and see; and from there go to Hamath the great; then go down to Gath of the Philistines. are they better than these kingdoms? or is their border greater than your border?
6:3あなたがたは災の日を遠ざけ、強暴の座を近づけている。		6:3 Those who put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near;
6:4わざわいなるかな、みずから象牙の寝台に伏し、長いすの上に身を伸ばし、群れのうちから小羊を取り、牛舎のうちから子牛を取って食べ、		6:4 Who lie on beds of ivory, and stretch themselves on their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall;
6:5琴の音に合わせて歌い騒ぎ、ダビデのように楽器を造り出し、		6:5 who strum on the strings of a harp; who invent for themselves instruments of music, like David;
6:6鉢をもって酒を飲み、いとも尊い油を身にぬり、ヨセフの破滅を悲しまない者たちよ。		6:6 who drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the best oils; but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.
6:7それゆえ今、彼らは捕われて、捕われ人のまっ先に立って行く。そしてかの身を伸ばした者どもの騒ぎはやむであろう」。		6:7 Therefore they will now go captive with the first who go captive; and the feasting and lounging will end.
6:8主なる神はおのれによって誓われた、（万軍の神、主は言われる、）「わたしはヤコブの誇を忌みきらい、そのもろもろの宮殿を憎む。わたしはこの町とすべてその中にいる者を渡す」。		6:8 "The Lord Yahweh has sworn by himself," says Yahweh, the God of Armies: "I abhor the pride of Jacob, and detest his fortresses. Therefore I will deliver up the city with all that is in it.
6:9一つの家に十人の者が残っていても、彼らは死に、		6:9 It will happen, if there remain ten men in one house, that they shall die.

6:11見よ、主は命じて、大きな家を撃って、みじんとなし、小さな家を撃って、切れ切れとされる。		6:11 "For, behold, Yahweh commands, and the great house will be smashed to pieces, and the little house into bits.
6:12馬は岩の上を走るだろうか。人は牛で海を耕すだろうか。ところがあなたがたは公道を毒に変じ、正義の実をにがよもぎに変じた。		6:12 Do horses run on the rocky crags? Does one plow there with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison, and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness;
6:13あなたがたはロデバルを喜び、「われわれは自分の力でカルナイムを得たではないか」と言う。		6:13 you who rejoice in a thing of nothing, who say, 'Haven't we taken for ourselves horns by our own strength?'
6:14それゆえ、万軍の神、主は言われる、「イスラエルの家よ、見よ、わたしは一つの国民を起して、あなたがたに敵対させる。彼らはハマテの入口からアラバの川まであなたがたを悩ます」。		6:14 For, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, house of Israel," says Yahweh, the God of Armies; "and they will afflict you from the entrance of Hamath to the brook of the Arabah."
7:1主なる神はこのようにわたしに示された。見よ、二番草のはえ出る初めに主は、いなごを造られた。見よ、その二番草は王の刈った後に、はえたものである。		7:1 Thus the Lord Yahweh showed me: and behold, he formed locusts in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and behold, it was the latter growth after the king's harvest.
7:2そのいなごが地の青草を食い尽した時、わたしは言った、「主なる神よ、どうぞ、ゆるしてください。ヤコブは小さい者です、どうして立つことができましょう」。		7:2 It happened that, when they made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, "Lord Yahweh, forgive, I beg you! How could Jacob stand? For he is small."
7:3主はこのことについて思いかえされ、「このことは起さない」と主は言われた。		7:3 Yahweh relented concerning this. "It shall not be," says Yahweh.
7:4主なる神はこのようにわたしに示された。見よ、主なる神はさばきのために火を呼ばれた。火は大淵を焼き、また地を焼こうとした。		7:4 Thus the Lord Yahweh showed me and behold, the Lord Yahweh called for judgment by fire; and it dried up the great deep, and would have devoured the land.
7:5その時わたしは言った、「主なる神よ、どうぞ、やめてください。ヤコブは小さい者です、どうして立つことができましょう」。		7:5 Then I said, "Lord Yahweh, stop, I beg you! How could Jacob stand? For he is small."
7:6主はこのことについて思いかえされ、「このこともまた起さない」と主なる神は言われた。		7:6 Yahweh relented concerning this. "This also shall not be," says the Lord Yahweh.
7:7また主はわたしに示された。見よ、主は測りなわをもって築いた石がきの上に立ち、その手に測りなわをもっておられた。		7:7 Thus he showed me and behold, the Lord stood beside a wall made by a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand.
7:8そして主はわたしに言われた、「アモスよ、あなたは何を見るか」。「測りなわ」とわたしが答えると、主はまた言われた、「見よ、わたしは測りなわをわが民イスラエルの中に置く。わたしはもはや彼らを見過ごしにしない。		7:8 Yahweh said to me, "Amos, what do you see?" I said, "A plumb line." Then the Lord said, "Behold, I will set a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel. I will not again pass by them any more.
7:9イサクの高き所は荒され、イスラエルの聖所は荒れはてる。わたしはつるぎをもってヤラベアムの家に立ち向かう」。		7:9 The high places of Isaac will be desolate, the sanctuaries of Israel will be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword."
7:10時にベテルの祭司アマジヤは、イスラエルの王ヤラベアムに人をつかわして言う、「イスラエルの家のただ中で、アモスはあなたにそむきました。この地は彼のもろもろの言葉に耐えることができません。		7:10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words.
7:11アモスはこのように言っています、『ヤラベアムはつるぎによって死ぬ、イスラエルは必ず捕えられて行って、その国を離れる』と」。		7:11 For Amos says, 'Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of his land.'"
7:12それからアマジヤはアモスに言った、「先見者よ、行ってユダの地にのがれ、かの地でパンを食べ、かの地で預言せよ。		7:12 Amaziah also said to Amos, "You seer, go, flee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:
7:13しかしベテルでは二度と預言してはならない。ここは王の聖所、国の宮だから」。		7:13 but don't prophesy again any more at Bethel; for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is a royal house!"
7:14アモスはアマジヤに答えた、「わたしは預言者でもなく、また預言者の子でもない。わたしは牧者である。わたしはいちじく桑の木を作る者である。		7:14 Then Amos answered Amaziah, "I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was a herdsman, and a farmer of sycamore figs;
7:15ところが主は群れに従っている所からわたしを取り、『行って、わが民イスラエルに預言せよ』と、主はわたしに言われた。		7:15 and Yahweh took me from following the flock, and Yahweh said to me, 'Go, prophesy to my people Israel.'
7:16それゆえ今、主の言葉を聞け。あなたは言う、『イスラエルに向かって預言するな、イサクの家に向かって語るな』と。		7:16 Now therefore listen to the word of Yahweh: 'You say, Don't prophesy against Israel, and don't preach against the house of Isaac.'
7:17それゆえ、主はこう言われる、『あなたの妻は町で遊女となり、あなたのむすこ、娘たちはつるぎに倒れ、あなたの地は測りなわで分かたれる。そしてあなたは汚れた地で死に、イスラエルは必ず捕えられて行って、その国を離れる』」。		7:17 Therefore thus says Yahweh: 'Your wife shall be a prostitute in the city, and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be divided by line; and you yourself shall die in a land that is unclean, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of his land.'"
8:1主なる神は、このようにわたしに示された。見よ、ひとかごの夏のくだものがある。		8:1 Thus the Lord Yahweh showed me: behold, a basket of summer fruit.
8:2主は言われた、「アモスよ、あなたは何を見るか」。わたしは「ひとかごの夏のくだもの」と答えた。すると主はわたしに言われた、「わが民イスラエルの終りがきた。わたしは再び彼らを見過ごしにしない。		8:2 He said, "Amos, what do you see?" I said, "A basket of summer fruit." Then Yahweh said to me, "The end has come on my people Israel. I will not again pass by them any more.
8:3その日には宮の歌は嘆きに変り、しかばねがおびただしく、人々は無言でこれを至る所に投げ捨てる」と主なる神は言われる。		8:3 The songs of the temple will be wailings in that day," says the Lord Yahweh. "The dead bodies will be many. In every place they will throw them out with silence.
8:4あなたがた、貧しい者を踏みつけ、また国の乏しい者を滅ぼす者よ、これを聞け。		8:4 Hear this, you who desire to swallow up the needy, and cause the poor of the land to fail,
8:5あなたがたは言う、「新月はいつ過ぎ去るだろう、そうしたら、われわれは穀物を売ろう。安息日はいつ過ぎ去るだろう、そうしたら、われわれは麦を売り出そう。われわれはエパを小さくし、シケルを大きくし、偽りのはかりをもって欺き、		8:5 Saying, 'When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell grain? And the Sabbath, that we may market wheat, making the ephah {1 ephah is about 22 litres or about 2/3 of a bushel} small, and the shekel large, and dealing falsely with balances of deceit;
8:6乏しい者を金で買い、貧しい者をくつ一足で買いとり、また、くず麦を売ろう」。		8:6 that we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes, and sell the sweepings with the wheat?'"
8:7主はヤコブの誇をさして誓われた、「わたしは必ず彼らのすべてのわざをいつまでも忘れない。		8:7 Yahweh has sworn by the pride of Jacob, "Surely I will never forget any of their works.
8:8これがために地は震わないであろうか。地に住む者はみな嘆かないであろうか。地はみなナイル川のようにわきあがり、エジプトのナイル川のようにみなぎって、また沈まないであろうか」。		8:8 Won't the land tremble for this, and everyone mourn who dwells in it? Yes, it will rise up wholly like the River; and it will be stirred up and sink again, like the River of Egypt.
8:9主なる神は言われる、「その日には、わたしは真昼に太陽を沈ませ、白昼に地を暗くし、		8:9 It will happen in that day," says the Lord Yahweh, "that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day.
8:10あなたがたの祭を嘆きに変らせ、あなたがたの歌をことごとく悲しみの歌に変らせ、すべての人に荒布を腰にまとわせ、すべての人に髪をそり落させ、その日を、ひとり子を失った喪中のようにし、その終りを、苦い日のようにする」。		8:10 I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will make you wear sackcloth on all your bodies, and baldness on every head. I will make it like the mourning for an only son, and its end like a bitter day.
8:11主なる神は言われる、「見よ、わたしがききんをこの国に送る日が来る、それはパンのききんではない、水にかわくのでもない、主の言葉を聞くことのききんである。		8:11 Behold, the days come," says the Lord Yahweh, "that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of Yahweh.
8:12彼らは海から海へさまよい歩き、主の言葉を求めて、こなたかなたへはせまわる、しかしこれを得ないであろう。		8:12 They will wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east; they will run back and forth to seek the word of Yahweh, and will not find it.
8:13その日には美しいおとめも、若い男もかわきのために気を失う。		8:13 In that day the beautiful virgins and the young men will faint for thirst.
8:14かのサマリヤのアシマをさして誓い、『ダンよ、あなたの神は生きている』と言い、また『ベエルシバの道は生きている』と言う者どもは必ず倒れる。再び起きあがることはない」。		8:14 Those who swear by the sin of Samaria, and say, 'As your god, Dan, lives;' and, 'As the way of Beersheba lives;' they will fall, and never rise up again."
9:1わたしは祭壇のかたわらに立っておられる主を見た。主は言われた、「柱の頭を打って、敷居を震わせ、これを打ち砕いて、すべての民の頭の上に落ちかからせよ。その残った者を、わたしはつるぎで殺し、そのひとりも逃げおおす者はなく、のがれうる者はない。		9:1 I saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and he said, "Strike the tops of the pillars, that the thresholds may shake; and break them in pieces on the head of all of them; and I will kill the last of them with the sword: there shall not one of them flee away, and there shall not one of them escape.
9:2たとい彼らは陰府に掘り下っても、わたしの手はこれをそこから引き出す。たとい彼らは天によじのぼっても、わたしはそこからこれを引きおろす。		9:2 Though they dig into Sheol {Sheol is the place of the dead.}, there my hand will take them; and though they climb up to heaven, there I will bring them down.
9:3たとい彼らはカルメルの頂に隠れても、わたしはこれを捜して、そこから引き出す。たとい彼らはわたしの目をのがれて、海の底に隠れても、わたしはへびに命じて、その所でこれをかませる。		9:3 Though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out there; and though they be hidden from my sight in the bottom of the sea, there I will command the serpent, and it will bite them.
9:4たとい彼らは捕われて、その敵の前に行っても、わたしはその所でつるぎに命じて、これを殺させる。わたしは彼らの上にわたしの目を注ぐ、それは災のためであって、幸のためではない」。		9:4 Though they go into captivity before their enemies, there I will command the sword, and it will kill them. I will set my eyes on them for evil, and not for good.
9:5万軍の神、主が地に触れられると、地は溶け、その中に住む者はみな嘆き、地はみなナイル川のようにわきあがり、エジプトのナイル川のようにまた沈む。		9:5 For the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, is he who touches the land and it melts, and all who dwell in it will mourn; and it will rise up wholly like the River, and will sink again, like the River of Egypt.
9:6主はご自分の高殿を天に築き、大空の基を地の上にすえ、海の水を呼んで、地のおもてに注がれる。その名は主ととなえられる。		9:6 It is he who builds his rooms in the heavens, and has founded his vault on the earth; he who calls for the waters of the sea, and pours them out on the surface of the earth; Yahweh is his name.
9:7主は言われる、「イスラエルの子らよ、あなたがたはわたしにとってエチオピヤびとのようではないか。わたしはイスラエルをエジプトの国から、ペリシテびとをカフトルから、スリヤびとをキルから導き上ったではないか。		9:7 Are you not like the children of the Ethiopians to me, children of Israel?" says Yahweh. "Haven't I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt, and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?
9:8見よ、主なる神の目はこの罪を犯した国の上に注がれている。わたしはこれを地のおもてから断ち滅ぼす。しかし、わたしはヤコブの家をことごとくは滅ぼさない」と主は言われる。		9:8 Behold, the eyes of the Lord Yahweh are on the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the surface of the earth; except that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob," says Yahweh.
9:9「見よ、わたしは命じて、人がふるいで物をふるうように、わたしはイスラエルの家を万国民のうちでふるう。ひと粒も地に落ちることはない。		9:9 "For, behold, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all the nations, as grain is sifted in a sieve, yet not the least kernel will fall on the earth.
9:10わが民の罪びと、すなわち『災はわれわれに近づかない、われわれに臨まない』と言う者どもはみな、つるぎで殺される。		9:10 All the sinners of my people will die by the sword, who say, 'Evil won't overtake nor meet us.'
9:11その日には、わたしはダビデの倒れた幕屋を興し、その破損を繕い、そのくずれた所を興し、これを昔の時のように建てる。		9:11 In that day I will raise up the tent of David who is fallen, and close up its breaches, and I will raise up its ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old;
9:12これは彼らがエドムの残った者、およびわが名をもって呼ばれるすべての国民を所有するためである」とこの事をなされる主は言われる。		9:12 that they may possess the remnant of Edom, and all the nations who are called by my name," says Yahweh who does this.
9:13主は言われる、「見よ、このような時が来る。その時には、耕す者は刈る者に相継ぎ、ぶどうを踏む者は種まく者に相継ぐ。もろもろの山にはうまい酒がしたたり、もろもろの丘は溶けて流れる。		9:13 "Behold, the days come," says Yahweh, "that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the one treading grapes him who sows seed; and sweet wine will drip from the mountains, and flow from the hills.
9:14わたしはわが民イスラエルの幸福をもとに返す。彼らは荒れた町々を建てて住み、ぶどう畑を作ってその酒を飲み、園を作ってその実を食べる。		9:14 I will bring my people Israel back from captivity, and they will rebuild the ruined cities, and inhabit them; and they will plant vineyards, and drink wine from them. They shall also make gardens, and eat their fruit.
9:15わたしは彼らをその地に植えつける。彼らはわたしが与えた地から再び抜きとられることはない」とあなたの神、主は言われる。		9:15 I will plant them on their land, and they will no more be plucked up out of their land which I have given them," says Yahweh your God.
