1:1ペトエルの子ヨエルに臨んだ主の言葉。		1:1 The Word of Yahweh {"Yahweh" is God's proper Name, sometimes rendered "LORD" (all caps) in other translations.} that came to Joel, the son of Pethuel.
1:2老人たちよ、これを聞け。すべてこの地に住む者よ、耳を傾けよ。あなたがたの世、またはあなたがたの先祖の世にこのような事があったか。		1:2 Hear this, you elders, And listen, all you inhabitants of the land. Has this ever happened in your days, or in the days of your fathers?
1:3これをあなたがたの子たちに語り、子たちはまたその子たちに語り、その子たちはまたこれを後の代に語り伝えよ。		1:3 Tell your children about it, and have your children tell their children, and their children, another generation.
1:4かみ食らういなごの残したものは、群がるいなごがこれを食い、群がるいなごの残したものは、とびいなごがこれを食い、とびいなごの残したものは、滅ぼすいなごがこれを食った。		1:4 What the swarming locust has left, the great locust has eaten. What the great locust has left, the grasshopper has eaten. What the grasshopper has left, the caterpillar has eaten.
1:5酔える者よ、目をさまして泣け。すべて酒を飲む者よ、うまい酒のゆえに泣き叫べ。うまい酒はあなたがたの口から断たれるからだ。		1:5 Wake up, you drunkards, and weep! Wail, all you drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.
1:6一つの国民がわたしの国に攻めのぼってきた。その勢いは強く、その数は計られず、その歯はししの歯のようで、雌じしのきばをもっている。		1:6 For a nation has come up on my land, strong, and without number. His teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he has the fangs of a lioness.
1:7彼らはわがぶどうの木を荒し、わがいちじくの木を折り、その皮をはだかにして捨てた。その枝は白くなった。		1:7 He has laid my vine waste, and stripped my fig tree. He has stripped its bark, and thrown it away. Its branches are made white.
1:8あなたがたは若い時の夫のために荒布を腰にまとったおとめのように泣き悲しめ。		1:8 Mourn like a virgin dressed in sackcloth for the husband of her youth!
1:9素祭と灌祭とは主の家に絶え、主に仕える祭司たちは嘆き悲しむ。		1:9 The meal offering and the drink offering are cut off from Yahweh's house. The priests, Yahweh's ministers, mourn.

1:11小麦および大麦のために、農夫たちよ、恥じよ、ぶどう作りたちよ、泣け。畑の収穫がうせ去ったからである。		1:11 Be confounded, you farmers! Wail, you vineyard keepers; for the wheat and for the barley; for the harvest of the field has perished.
1:12ぶどうの木は枯れ、いちじくの木はしおれ、ざくろ、やし、りんご、野のすべての木はしぼんだ。それゆえ楽しみは人の子らからかれうせた。		1:12 The vine has dried up, and the fig tree withered; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all of the trees of the field are withered; for joy has withered away from the sons of men.
1:13祭司たちよ、荒布を腰にまとい、泣き悲しめ。祭壇に仕える者たちよ、泣け。神に仕える者たちよ、来て、荒布をまとい、夜を過ごせ。素祭も灌祭もあなたがたの神の家から退けられたからである。		1:13 Put on sackcloth and mourn, you priests! Wail, you ministers of the altar. Come, lie all night in sackcloth, you ministers of my God {The Hebrew word rendered "God" is "Elohim."}, for the meal offering and the drink offering are withheld from your God's house.
1:14あなたがたは断食を聖別し、聖会を召集し、長老たちを集め、国の民をことごとくあなたがたの神、主の家に集め、主に向かって叫べ。		1:14 Sanctify a fast. Call a solemn assembly. Gather the elders, and all the inhabitants of the land, to the house of Yahweh, your God, and cry to Yahweh.
1:15ああ、その日はわざわいだ。主の日は近く、全能者からの滅びのように来るからである。		1:15 Alas for the day! For the day of Yahweh is at hand, and it will come as destruction from the Almighty.
1:16われわれの目の前に食物は絶え、われわれの神の家から喜びと楽しみが絶えたではないか。		1:16 Isn't the food cut off before our eyes; joy and gladness from the house of our God?
1:17種は土の下に朽ち、倉は荒れ、穀物がつきたので、穀倉はこわされる。		1:17 The seeds rot under their clods. The granaries are laid desolate. The barns are broken down, for the grain has withered.
1:18いかに家畜はうめき鳴くか。牛の群れはさまよう。彼らには牧草がないからだ。羊の群れも滅びうせる。		1:18 How the animals groan! The herds of livestock are perplexed, because they have no pasture. Yes, the flocks of sheep are made desolate.
1:19主よ、わたしはあなたに向かって呼ばわる。火が荒野の牧草を焼き滅ぼし、炎が野のすべての木を焼き尽したからである。		1:19 Yahweh, I cry to you, For the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame has burned all the trees of the field.
1:20野の獣もまたあなたに向かって呼ばわる。水の流れがかれはて、火が荒野の牧草を焼き滅ぼしたからである		1:20 Yes, the animals of the field pant to you, for the water brooks have dried up, And the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness.
2:1あなたがたはシオンでラッパを吹け。わが聖なる山で警報を吹きならせ。国の民はみな、ふるいわななけ。主の日が来るからである。それは近い。		2:1 Blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of Yahweh comes, for it is close at hand:
2:2これは暗く、薄暗い日、雲の群がるまっくらな日である。多くの強い民が暗やみのようにもろもろの山をおおう。このようなことは昔からあったことがなく、後の代々の年にも再び起ることがないであろう。		2:2 A day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness. As the dawn spreading on the mountains, a great and strong people; there has never been the like, neither will there be any more after them, even to the years of many generations.
2:3火は彼らの前を焼き、炎は彼らの後に燃える。彼らのこない前には、地はエデンの園のようであるが、その去った後は荒れ果てた野のようになる。これをのがれうるものは一つもない。		2:3 A fire devours before them, and behind them, a flame burns. The land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them, a desolate wilderness. Yes, and no one has escaped them.
2:4そのかたちは馬のかたちのようであり、その走ることは軍馬のようである。		2:4 Their appearance is as the appearance of horses, and as horsemen, so do they run.
2:5山の頂でとびおどる音は、戦車のとどろくようである。また刈り株を焼く火の炎の音のようであり、戦いの備えをした強い軍隊のようである。		2:5 Like the noise of chariots on the tops of the mountains do they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devours the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array.
2:6その前にもろもろの民はなやみ、すべての顔は色を失う。		2:6 At their presence the peoples are in anguish. All faces have grown pale.
2:7彼らは勇士のように走り、兵士のように城壁によじ登る。彼らはおのおの自分の道を進んで行って、その道を踏みはずさない。		2:7 They run like mighty men. They climb the wall like warriors. They each march in his line, and they don't swerve off course.
2:8彼らは互におしあわず、おのおのその道を進み行く。彼らは武器の中にとびこんでも、身をそこなわない。		2:8 Neither does one jostle another; they march everyone in his path, and they burst through the defenses, and don't break ranks.
2:9彼らは町にとび入り、城壁の上を走り、家々によじ登り、盗びとのように窓からはいる。		2:9 They rush on the city. They run on the wall. They climb up into the houses. They enter in at the windows like thieves.
2:10地は彼らの前におののき、天はふるい、日も月も暗くなり、星はその光を失う。		2:10 The earth quakes before them. The heavens tremble. The sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining.
2:11主はその軍勢の前で声をあげられる。その軍隊は非常に多いからである。そのみ言葉をなし遂げる者は強い。主の日は大いにして、はなはだ恐ろしいゆえ、だれがこれに耐えることができよう。		2:11 Yahweh thunders his voice before his army; for his forces are very great; for he is strong who obeys his command; for the day of Yahweh is great and very awesome, and who can endure it?
2:12主は言われる、「今からでも、あなたがたは心をつくし、断食と嘆きと、悲しみとをもってわたしに帰れ。		2:12 "Yet even now," says Yahweh, "turn to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning."
2:13あなたがたは衣服ではなく、心を裂け」。あなたがたの神、主に帰れ。主は恵みあり、あわれみあり、怒ることがおそく、いつくしみが豊かで、災を思いかえされるからである。		2:13 Tear your heart, and not your garments, and turn to Yahweh, your God; for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and relents from sending calamity.
2:14神があるいは立ち返り、思いかえして祝福をその後に残し、素祭と灌祭とをあなたがたの神、主にささげさせられる事はないとだれが知るだろうか。		2:14 Who knows? He may turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind him, even a meal offering and a drink offering to Yahweh, your God.
2:15シオンでラッパを吹きならせ。断食を聖別し、聖会を召集し、		2:15 Blow the trumpet in Zion! Sanctify a fast. Call a solemn assembly.
2:16民を集め、会衆を聖別し、老人たちを集め、幼な子、乳のみ子を集め、花婿をその家から呼びだし、花嫁をそのへやから呼びだせ。		2:16 Gather the people. Sanctify the assembly. Assemble the elders. Gather the children, and those who nurse from breasts. Let the bridegroom go forth from his room, and the bride out of her room.
2:17主に仕える祭司たちは、廊と祭壇との間で泣いて言え、「主よ、あなたの民をゆるし、あなたの嗣業をもろもろの国民のうちに、そしりと笑い草にさせないでください。どうしてもろもろの国民に、『彼らの神はどこにいるのか』と言わせてよいでしょうか」。		2:17 Let the priests, the ministers of Yahweh, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, "Spare your people, Yahweh, and don't give your heritage to reproach, that the nations should rule over them. Why should they say among the peoples, 'Where is their God?'"
2:18その時主は自分の地のために、ねたみを起し、その民をあわれまれた。		2:18 Then Yahweh was jealous for his land, And had pity on his people.
2:19主は答えて、その民に言われた、「見よ、わたしは穀物と新しい酒と油とをあなたがたに送る。あなたがたはこれを食べて飽きるであろう。わたしは重ねてあなたがたにもろもろの国民のうちでそしりを受けさせない。		2:19 Yahweh answered his people, "Behold, I will send you grain, new wine, and oil, and you will be satisfied with them; and I will no more make you a reproach among the nations.
2:20わたしは北から来る者をあなたがたから遠ざけ、これをかわいた荒れ地に追いやり、その前の者を東の海に、その後の者を西の海に追いやる。その臭いにおいは起り、その悪しきにおいは上る。これは大いなる事をしたからである。		2:20 But I will remove the northern army far away from you, and will drive it into a barren and desolate land, its front into the eastern sea, and its back into the western sea; and its stench will come up, and its bad smell will rise." Surely he has done great things.
2:21地よ恐るな、喜び楽しめ、主は大いなる事を行われたからである。		2:21 Land, don't be afraid. Be glad and rejoice, for Yahweh has done great things.
2:22野のもろもろの獣よ、恐るな。荒野の牧草はもえいで、木はその実を結び、いちじくの木とぶどうの木とは豊かに実る。		2:22 Don't be afraid, you animals of the field; for the pastures of the wilderness spring up, for the tree bears its fruit. The fig tree and the vine yield their strength.
2:23シオンの子らよ、あなたがたの神、主によって喜び楽しめ。主はあなたがたを義とするために秋の雨を賜い、またあなたがたのために豊かに雨を降らせ、前のように、秋の雨と春の雨とを降らせられる。		2:23 "Be glad then, you children of Zion, and rejoice in Yahweh, your God; for he gives you the former rain in just measure, and he causes the rain to come down for you, the former rain and the latter rain, as before.
2:24打ち場は穀物で満ち、石がめは新しい酒と油とであふれる。		2:24 The threshing floors will be full of wheat, and the vats will overflow with new wine and oil.
2:25わたしがあなたがたに送った大軍、すなわち群がるいなご、とびいなご、滅ぼすいなご、かみ食らういなごの食った年をわたしはあなたがたに償う。		2:25 I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the great locust, the grasshopper, and the caterpillar, my great army, which I sent among you.
2:26あなたがたは、じゅうぶん食べて飽き、あなたがたに不思議なわざをなされたあなたがたの神、主のみ名をほめたたえる。わが民は永遠にはずかしめられることがない。		2:26 You will have plenty to eat, and be satisfied, and will praise the name of Yahweh, your God, who has dealt wondrously with you; and my people will never again be disappointed.
2:27あなたがたはイスラエルのうちにわたしのいることを知り、主なるわたしがあなたがたの神であって、ほかにないことを知る。わが民は永遠にはずかしめられることがない。		2:27 You will know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am Yahweh, your God, and there is no one else; and my people will never again be disappointed.
2:28その後わたしはわが霊をすべての肉なる者に注ぐ。あなたがたのむすこ、娘は預言をし、あなたがたの老人たちは夢を見、あなたがたの若者たちは幻を見る。		2:28 "It will happen afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; and your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions.
2:29その日わたしはまたわが霊をしもべ、はしために注ぐ。		2:29 And also on the servants and on the handmaids in those days, I will pour out my Spirit.
2:30わたしはまた、天と地とにしるしを示す。すなわち血と、火と、煙の柱とがあるであろう。		2:30 I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: blood, fire, and pillars of smoke.
2:31主の大いなる恐るべき日が来る前に、日は暗く、月は血に変る。		2:31 The sun will be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of Yahweh comes.
2:32すべて主の名を呼ぶ者は救われる。それは主が言われたように、シオンの山とエルサレムとに、のがれる者があるからである。その残った者のうちに、主のお召しになる者がある。		2:32 It will happen that whoever will call on the name of Yahweh shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be those who escape, as Yahweh has said, and among the remnant, those whom Yahweh calls.
3:1見よ、わたしがユダとエルサレムとの幸福をもとに返すその日、その時、		3:1 "For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem,
3:2わたしは万国の民を集めて、これをヨシャパテの谷に携えくだり、その所でわが民、わが嗣業であるイスラエルのために彼らをさばく。彼らがわが民を諸国民のうちに散らして、わたしの地を分かち取ったからである。		3:2 I will gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat; and I will execute judgment on them there for my people, and for my heritage, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations. They have divided my land,
3:3彼らはわが民をくじ引きにし、遊女のために少年をわたし、酒のために少女を売って飲んだ。		3:3 and have cast lots for my people, and have given a boy for a prostitute, and sold a girl for wine, that they may drink.
3:4ツロとシドンよ、ペリシテのすべての地方よ、おまえたちは、わたしとなんのかかわりがあるか。おまえたちはわたしに報復をしようとするのか。もしおまえたちがわたしに報復しようとするなら、わたしは時をうつさず、すみやかに、おまえたちのおこないの報復をおまえたちの頭上にこさせる。		3:4 "Yes, and what are you to me, Tyre, and Sidon, and all the regions of Philistia? Will you repay me? And if you repay me, I will swiftly and speedily return your repayment on your own head.
3:5これはおまえたちがわたしの銀と金とをとり、わたしの貴重な宝をおまえたちの宮に携え行き、		3:5 Because you have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried my finest treasures into your temples,
3:6またユダの人々とエルサレムの人々とをギリシヤびとに売って、その本国から遠く離れさせたからである。		3:6 and have sold the children of Judah and the children of Jerusalem to the sons of the Greeks, that you may remove them far from their border.
3:7見よ、わたしはおまえたちが売ったその所から彼らを起して、おまえたちのおこないの報復をおまえたちの頭上にこさせる。		3:7 Behold, I will stir them up out of the place where you have sold them, and will return your repayment on your own head;
3:8わたしはおまえたちのむすこ娘たちをユダの人々の手に売る。彼らはこれを遠い国びとであるシバびとに売ると、主は言われる」。		3:8 and I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hands of the children of Judah, and they will sell them to the men of Sheba, to a faraway nation, for Yahweh has spoken it."
3:9もろもろの国民の中に宣べ伝えよ。戦いの備えをなし、勇士をふるい立たせ、兵士をことごとく近づかせ、のぼらせよ。		3:9 Proclaim this among the nations: "Prepare for war! Stir up the mighty men. Let all the warriors draw near. Let them come up.
3:10あなたがたのすきを、つるぎに、あなたがたのかまを、やりに打ちかえよ。弱い者に「わたしは勇士である」と言わせよ。		3:10 Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruning hooks into spears. Let the weak say, 'I am strong.'
3:11周囲のすべての国民よ、急ぎ来て、集まれ。主よ、あなたの勇士をかしこにお下しください。		3:11 Hurry and come, all you surrounding nations, and gather yourselves together." Cause your mighty ones to come down there, Yahweh.
3:12もろもろの国民をふるい立たせ、ヨシャパテの谷にのぼらせよ。わたしはそこに座して、周囲のすべての国民をさばく。		3:12 "Let the nations arouse themselves, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat; for there will I sit to judge all the surrounding nations.
3:13かまを入れよ、作物は熟した。来て踏め、酒ぶねは満ち、石がめはあふれている。彼らの悪が大きいからだ。		3:13 Put in the sickle; for the harvest is ripe. Come, tread, for the winepress is full, the vats overflow, for their wickedness is great."
3:14群衆また群衆は、さばきの谷におる。主の日がさばきの谷に近いからである。		3:14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of Yahweh is near, in the valley of decision.
3:15日も月も暗くなり、星もその光を失う。		3:15 The sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining.
3:16主はシオンから大声で叫び、エルサレムから声を出される。天も地もふるい動く。しかし主はその民の避け所、イスラエルの人々のとりでである。		3:16 Yahweh will roar from Zion, and thunder from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth will shake; but Yahweh will be a refuge to his people, and a stronghold to the children of Israel.
3:17「そこであなたがたは知るであろう、わたしはあなたがたの神、主であって、わが聖なる山シオンに住むことを。エルサレムは聖所となり、他国人は重ねてその中を通ることがない。		3:17 "So you will know that I am Yahweh, your God, dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain. Then Jerusalem will be holy, and no strangers will pass through her any more.
3:18その日もろもろの山にうまい酒がしたたり、もろもろの丘は乳を流し、ユダのすべての川は水を流す。泉は主の家から出て、シッテムの谷を潤す。		3:18 It will happen in that day, that the mountains will drop down sweet wine, the hills will flow with milk, all the brooks of Judah will flow with waters, and a fountain will come forth from the house of Yahweh, and will water the valley of Shittim.
3:19エジプトは荒れ地となり、エドムは荒野となる。彼らはその国でユダの人々をしえたげ、罪なき者の血を流したからである。		3:19 Egypt will be a desolation, and Edom will be a desolate wilderness, for the violence done to the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land.
3:20しかしユダは永遠に人の住む所となり、エルサレムは世々に保つ。		3:20 But Judah will be inhabited forever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.
3:21わたしは彼らに血の報復をなし、とがある者をゆるさない。主はシオンに住まわれる」。		3:21 I will cleanse their blood, that I have not cleansed: for Yahweh dwells in Zion."
