Will they fortify themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, since they are burned?" | |

| 4:8皆共に相はかり、エルサレムを攻めて、その中に混乱を起そうとした。 | 4:8 and they conspired all of them together to come and fight against Jerusalem, and to cause confusion therein. | |
| 4:9そこでわれわれは神に祈り、また日夜見張りを置いて彼らに備えた。 | 4:9 But we made our prayer to our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them. | |

| 5:15わたしより以前の総督らは民に重荷を負わせ、彼らから銀四十シケルのほかにパンとぶどう酒を取り、また彼らのしもべたちも民を圧迫した。しかしわたしは神を恐れるので、そのようなことはしなかった。 | 5:15 But the former governors who were before me were supported by the people, and took bread and wine from them, besides forty shekels of silver; yes, even their servants ruled over the people: but I didn't do so, because of the fear of God. | |
| 5:16わたしはかえって、この城壁の工事に身をゆだね、どんな土地をも買ったことはない。わたしのしもべたちは皆そこに集まって工事をした。 | 5:16 Yes, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered there to the work. | |
| 5:17またわたしの食卓にはユダヤ人と、つかさたち百五十人もあり、そのほかに、われわれの周囲の異邦人のうちからきた人々もあった。 | 5:17 Moreover there were at my table, of the Jews and the rulers, one hundred fifty men, besides those who came to us from among the nations that were around us. | |
| 5:18これがために一日に牛一頭、肥えた羊六頭を備え、また鶏をもわたしのために備え、十日ごとにたくさんのぶどう酒を備えたが、わたしはこの民の労役が重かったので、総督としての手当を求めなかった。 | 5:18 Now that which was prepared for one day was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this I didn't demand the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy on this people. | |
| 5:19わが神よ、わたしがこの民のためにしたすべての事を覚えて、わたしをお恵みください。 | 5:19 Remember to me, my God, for good, all that I have done for this people. | |
| 6:1サンバラテ、トビヤ、アラビヤびとガシムおよびその他のわれわれの敵は、わたしが城壁を築き終って、一つの破れも残らないと聞いた。（しかしその時にはまだ門のとびらをつけていなかったのである。） | 6:1 Now it happened, when it was reported to Sanballat and Tobiah, and to Geshem the Arabian, and to the rest of our enemies, that I had built the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though even to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates;) | |

| 6:3それでわたしは彼らに使者をつかわして言わせた、「わたしは大いなる工事をしているから下って行くことはできない。どうしてこの工事をさしおいて、あなたがたの所へ下って行き、その間、工事をやめることができようか」。 | 6:3 I sent messengers to them, saying, "I am doing a great work, so that I can't come down. Why should the work cease, while I leave it, and come down to you?" | |
| 6:4彼らは四度までこのようにわたしに人をつかわしたが、わたしは同じように彼らに答えた。 | 6:4 They sent to me four times after this sort; and I answered them the same way. | |
| 6:5ところが、サンバラテは五度目にそのしもべを前のようにわたしにつかわした。その手には開封の手紙を携えていた。 | 6:5 Then Sanballat sent his servant to me the same way the fifth time with an open letter in his hand, | |

| 6:12わたしは悟った。神が彼をつかわされたのではない。彼がわたしにむかってこの預言を伝えたのは、トビヤとサンバラテが彼を買収したためである。 | 6:12 I discerned, and behold, God had not sent him; but he pronounced this prophecy against me. Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. | |
| 6:13彼が買収されたのはこの事のためである。すなわちわたしを恐れさせ、わたしにこのようにさせて、罪を犯させ、わたしに悪名をきせて侮辱するためであった。 | 6:13 He hired so that I would be afraid, do so, and sin, and that they might have material for an evil report, that they might reproach me. | |

| 13:5トビヤのために大きなへやを備えた。そのへやはもと、素祭の物、乳香、器物および規定によってレビびと、歌うたう者および門を守る者たちに与える穀物、ぶどう酒、油の十分の一、ならびに祭司のためのささげ物を置いた所である。 | 13:5 had prepared for him a great room, where before they laid the meal offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the wave offerings for the priests. | |

| 13:8わたしは非常に怒り、トビヤの家の器物をことごとくそのへやから投げだし、 | 13:8 It grieved me severely: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the room. | |
| 13:9命じて、すべてのへやを清めさせ、そして神の宮の器物および素祭、乳香などを再びそこに携え入れた。 | 13:9 Then I commanded, and they cleansed the rooms: and there brought I again the vessels of God's house, with the meal offerings and the frankincense. | |
| 13:10わたしはまたレビびとがその受くべき分を与えられていなかったことを知った。これがためにその務をなすレビびとおよび歌うたう者たちは、おのおの自分の畑に逃げ帰った。 | 13:10 I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them; so that the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had fled everyone to his field. | |
| 13:11それでわたしはつかさたちを責めて言った、「なぜ神の宮を捨てさせたのか」。そしてレビびとを招き集めて、その持ち場に復帰させた。 | 13:11 Then I contended with the rulers, and said, "Why is God's house forsaken?" I gathered them together, and set them in their place. | |
| 13:12そこでユダの人々は皆、穀物、ぶどう酒、油の十分の一を倉に携えてきた。 | 13:12 Then brought all Judah the tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil to the treasuries. | |
| 13:13わたしは祭司シレミヤ、学者ザドクおよびレビびとペダヤを倉のつかさとし、またマッタニヤの子ザックルの子ハナンをその助手として倉をつかさどらせた。彼らは忠実な者と思われたからである。彼らの任務は兄弟たちに分配する事であった。 | 13:13 I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were counted faithful, and their business was to distribute to their brothers. | |
| 13:14わが神よ、この事のためにわたしを覚えてください。わが神の宮とその勤めのためにわたしが行った良きわざをぬぐい去らないでください。 | 13:14 Remember me, my God, concerning this, and don't wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for its observances. | |
| 13:15そのころわたしはユダのうちで安息日に酒ぶねを踏む者、麦束を持ってきて、ろばに負わす者、またぶどう酒、ぶどう、いちじくおよびさまざまの荷を安息日にエルサレムに運び入れる者を見たので、わたしは彼らが食物を売っていたその日に彼らを戒めた。 | 13:15 In those days saw I in Judah some men treading winepresses on the Sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and loading donkeys; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all kinds of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day in which they sold food. | |
| 13:16そこに住んでいたツロの人々もまた魚およびさまざまの品物を持ってきて、安息日にユダの人々に売り、エルサレムで商売した。 | 13:16 There lived men of Tyre also therein, who brought in fish, and all kinds of wares, and sold on the Sabbath to the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. | |
| 13:17そこでわたしはユダの尊い人々を責めて言った、「あなたがたはなぜこの悪事を行って、安息日を汚すのか。 | 13:17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, "What evil thing is this that you do, and profane the Sabbath day? | |
| 13:18あなたがたの先祖も、このように行ったので、われわれの神はこのすべての災を、われわれとこの町に下されたではないか。ところがあなたがたは安息日を汚して、さらに大いなる怒りをイスラエルの上に招くのである」。 | 13:18 Didn't your fathers do thus, and didn't our God bring all this evil on us, and on this city? Yet you bring more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath." | |
| 13:19そこで安息日の前に、エルサレムのもろもろの門が暗くなり始めた時、わたしは命じてそのとびらを閉じさせ、安息日が終るまでこれを開いてはならないと命じ、わたしのしもべ数人を門に置いて、安息日に荷を携え入れさせないようにした。 | 13:19 It came to pass that, when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut, and commanded that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. I set some of my servants over the gates, that no burden should be brought in on the Sabbath day. | |
| 13:20これがために、商人およびさまざまの品物を売る者どもは一、二回エルサレムの外に宿った。 | 13:20 So the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside of Jerusalem once or twice. | |
| 13:21わたしは彼らを戒めて言った、「あなたがたはなぜ城壁の前に宿るのか。もしあなたがたが重ねてそのようなことをするならば、わたしはあなたがたを処罰する」と。そのとき以来、彼らは安息日にはこなかった。 | 13:21 Then I testified against them, and said to them, "Why do you stay around the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you." From that time on, they didn't come on the Sabbath. | |
| 13:22わたしはまたレビびとに命じて、その身を清めさせ、来て門を守らせて、安息日を聖別した。わが神よ、わたしのためにまた、このことを覚え、あなたの大いなるいつくしみをもって、わたしをあわれんでください。 | 13:22 I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. Remember to me, my God, this also, and spare me according to the greatness of your loving kindness. | |
| 13:23そのころまた、わたしはアシドド、アンモン、モアブの女をめとったユダヤ人を見た。 | 13:23 In those days also saw I the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab: | |
| 13:24彼らの子供の半分はアシドドの言葉を語って、ユダヤの言葉を語ることができず、おのおのその母親の出た民の言葉を語った。 | 13:24 and their children spoke half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews' language, but according to the language of each people. | |
| 13:25わたしは彼らを責め、またののしり、そのうちの数人を撃って、その毛を抜き、神の名をさして誓わせて言った、「あなたがたは彼らのむすこに自分の娘を与えてはならない。またあなたがたのむすこ、またはあなたがた自身のために彼らの娘をめとってはならない。 | 13:25 I contended with them, and cursed them, and struck certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, "You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves. | |
| 13:26イスラエルの王ソロモンはこれらのことによって罪を犯したではないか。彼のような王は多くの国民のうちにもなく、神に愛せられた者である。神は彼をイスラエル全国の王とせられた。ところが異邦の女たちは彼に罪を犯させた。 | 13:26 Didn't Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? Yet among many nations was there no king like him, and he was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless foreign women caused even him to sin. | |
| 13:27それゆえあなたがたが異邦の女をめとり、このすべての大いなる悪を行って、われわれの神に罪を犯すのを、われわれは聞き流しにしておけようか」。 | 13:27 Shall we then listen to you to do all this great evil, to trespass against our God in marrying foreign women?" | |
| 13:28大祭司エリアシブの子ヨイアダのひとりの子はホロニびとサンバラテの婿であったので、わたしは彼をわたしのところから追い出した。 | 13:28 One of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me. | |
| 13:29わが神よ、彼らのことを覚えてください。彼らは祭司の職を汚し、また祭司およびレビびとの契約を汚しました。 | 13:29 Remember them, my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites. | |
| 13:30このように、わたしは彼らを清めて、異邦のものをことごとく捨てさせ、祭司およびレビびとの務を定めて、おのおのそのわざにつかせた。 | 13:30 Thus I cleansed them from all foreigners, and appointed duties for the priests and for the Levites, everyone in his work; | |
| 13:31また定められた時に、たきぎの供え物をささげさせ、また初物をささげさせた。わが神よ、わたしを覚え、わたしをお恵みください。 | 13:31 and for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the first fruits. Remember me, my God, for good. |
